Three years after winning a flag and 5 years before playing in out next GF; The year we'd lost the QF to Port;

Ben Johnson retired and the following players were delisted; Darren Jolly, Alan Didak, Andrew Krakouer, Jordan Russell, Ben Richmond, Michael Hartley and Corey Gault.

We lost Dale Thomas to Carlton as a free agent. He wasn't the same player and it took him a while to get going, but he ended up playing 101 games and became a serviceable player for them. We received pick 11 as compo.

We signed Tony Armstrong as a delisted free agent. He was on the list for 2 seasons and played 6 games. Other free agents that went to other clubs included; Lance Franklin, Nick Dal Santo and Eddie Betts. (How funny that Betts and Thomas were never teammates).

We traded in Patrick Karnezis for Jackson Paine in a bit of a nil all draw.

We traded in Heath Shaw for Taylor Adams. Losing Shaw was horrible, but Adams has also been great.

We traded picks 11, 31 and 49 to West Coast for picks 6 and 44. And then we traded in Jesse White for pick 44. I think this was an attempt to get Bontempelli.

Collingwood drafted Matthew Scharenberg (6), Nathan Freeman (10), Tom Langdon (65), Jonathon Marsh (87) and then elevated Dwyer and Oxley from the rookie list.

West Coast took Dom Sheed (11), Malcolm Karpany (31) and Dylan Main (49). Sydney took Aliir Aliir (44).

Plenty of other clubs made mistakes too, but the following guys also went after pick 10; Patrick Cripps (13), Zak Jones (15), Matt Crouch (23), Daniel McStay (25), Zach Merrett (26), Ben Brown (47), Orazio Fantasia (55), James Sicily (56).It's also worth nothing that the Lions took James Aish with pick 7, who we traded for a couple seasons later.

How are you to know though? 'Berg and Freeman had a horrible run with injuries and you just never know what gems you can find in the later rounds. But just imagine if we had a bit more luck in this draft! I look back at the 2013 draft and think what if... what bloody if....

Two picks in the top 10 and our pick 65 has played about 3 times as many games as them combined. Spud of a draft year.

Of course, the decision to try to improve the talent pool that year was always the correct one. It just shows that things can go awry, no matter how well you plan. On the other hand, if we’d taken, say, Cripps and Merrett, we might have won a couple of flags with that draft by now.

Did not help our 2 Top 10 Picks have such big Injurie issues.

Freeman destroying his Hammy in the 1st Pre-Season game and Schaz 3 ACL's.

IF they stay Fit we might be seeing this Period Differntly

Well at least 16 other clubs overlooked Ben Brown too.
It’s rare to pick up such a quality KPF so late in the draft.
It was an inspired selection by the Roos.
It’s up there with Chris Grant at pick # 100 odd !

Well, Hine was interested years before but offered only a rookie spot, and BB rejected it. (And of course our club is the only one where BB's uncle played in a premiership.)

One can dream tho, Bont slips to 6, Cripps taken at 10, Ben Brown at 44, Sicily at 65, Langdon slips to 85. Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing

Could go one further and sign Dal Santo instead of Armstrong, but that'd mess the whole thing up.

This is all too depressing.

Every draft pales when you compare it with the clubs decision to trade
Pick 3 for S.McKee & pick 7. Coulda shoulda had Pavlich & won the 2002
flag.

The failure of this draft cost us 1-2 flags. We should have had an additional superstar (or two) in 2018 GF and 2019 finals series. What a bust!

Yes, but we were in a better position than any of those 16 to assess Brown's potential. He was the nephew of 1990 Premiership player James "Charlie" Manson. Did anyone from the club talk to Charlie about his nephew's junior history or his attitude/work ethic?

Just looked at the Rookie Draft that followed and we redrafted Gault. Jake Kelly was taken by the Crows shortly after.

Yes we've made some horrendous draft mistakes - no doubt about that.

But then, no one expected Pendlebury to be taken at pick 5 and I think he's done ok for us.

Soft, outside player. Won’t get to 30 senior games.
