I find the Cody Hirst situation interesting.

Just delisted by the Swans who picked him up in the 2019 mid season draft.

He didnt play a single game for them. But from what I've read, he was doing really well for the Eastern Rangers and was a massive chance to be drafted next month had he not opted for the mid-season draft.

Quote:
The 19-year-old's start to the season with NAB League outfit the Eastern Ranges – where he averaged close to 24 disposals per game throughout its first five matches – had put the diminutive midfielder firmly at the forefront of the minds of AFL recruiters.

Many of those same recruiters believe Hirst subsequently would have been a top-50 draft prospect by season's end, had he seen out his overage year at the Ranges.

Indeed, should he have taken this route – or, had he come through the system in any other year – it's a near-certainty Hirst would have been selected to an AFL club this November and subsequently earned the standard two-year contract for a new draftee.

Instead, he nominated for the mid-season draft and received the newly introduced six-month contract until the end of the year.

His decision to nominate was justified, given he was one of just 13 players selected by an AFL club on the night and therefore given his chance to make his name on a list.

He ended up playing 12 NEAFL games for the Swans, for nine goals.

It seems as tho he fast tracked his position on an AFL list, but has been delisted after his 6 month contract has finished. Had he been drafted next month, he would have 2 years to push his case at AFL level. I cant see him being drafted in the national draft, but I think someone will have a shot on him in the rookie draft.

So far, nine of the 13 players recruited back in May have been given new deals. Josh Deluca has been cut by Carlton. But John Noble and Ryan Gardner (Bulldogs) are both expected to re-sign soon, meaning that Deluca and Hirst will be the only players delisted.

Some would say that this is an indictment on the system, and it is possible that Hirst would have been better served by biding his time, though 11 out of 13 getting a new contract is actually a pretty impressive success rate – and let's face it, luck plays a pretty big role in making it in the AFL at the best of times. While obviously getting delisted puts an asterisk next to your name, if he's good enough, he'll still get picked up by some other team, you'd think.

Some interest:
Harley Bennell (A-grader when fit)

Bennell has completed and passed a medical in Sydney and has twice had dinner with senior players, including superstar Lance Franklin.

... he will begin running this week and advice from multiple surgeons and Melbourne-based calf expert Peter Santon is that Bennell is a strong chance of returning to full fitness.."

His best fit would be a club good with the injury stuff, so not us.

Bennell will not be choosing Collingwood or Essendon.

Daniel Menzel has been delisted by the Swans.

Quote:
has fought back from four ACL tears after being destined for stardom as a young Geelong half forward who kicked 5.2 in the last round of the 2011 home-and-away season.

Even after those reconstructions he kicked 40.16 in 2017, but after a hot start to 2018 had an adverse reaction to injections into his groin.

He finished with 27.15 for the season but was delisted and eventually found a new home at Sydney but immediately needed groin surgery upon arriving.

It meant his start to this season was delayed but he kicked seven goals in seven games this year and would have been fit to start pre-season for one of the first times in his career.

I would be. We don't have another tall forward who can ruck in our depth. Lynch and Cameron are primarily Rucks, Wilson and the Irish kid will take time. I'd very much go a rookie spot at either Buzza or Jok.

I dont think they'll be much interest in Menzel.

What about 196 cm Mitch Brown who was just cut by Essendon?

https://afltables.com/afl/stats/players/M/Mitch_Brown1.html

Those numbers are not too bad. Can play FF and FB. Doesnt seem to take a lot of marks but is an endurance runner. He is 29.

Josh Smith was also delisted by West Coast. He played 2 games for them.

Could be a slight chance to get to the Suns.

Similar to Mitch Brown. 196cm, age 29, can play FF and FB.

But he's already been at 3 clubs.

https://afltables.com/afl/stats/players/L/Lachie_Henderson.html

Geelong fans seemed glad to see the back of him. Was a serviceable player in lean years at Carlton and also in his first 2 years with the Cats. His last 2 seasons were not anything special.

I dont think we'll be looking. Hope someone gives him a shot.

70 tackles and 20 goals from 20 games this year.

Young enough at 27. But only a 176cm medium forward, so not filling a need on our list. But would be on a lower wage as a DFA.

Does he improve our list and does he help us go a step further?

Sam Gray didn't last long. Swans to snap him up (taking Menzel spot).

Buzza is also expected to sign with Port.

Doesn't sound like we're linked to anyone as a DFA.

^ I think Collingwood is quite happy with its list, generally, and expects to see substantial improvement from a raft of good quality kids that we haven't really seen (Quaynor, Tyler Brown, Daicos, Kelly, Murphy, Bosenavulagi etc). With some more footy from Beams, Langdon, Adams, Sier, Elliott and Cox next year, there's probably considerable natural growth in the team.

I thought we might quite like another "spare parts" tall like Roughead to add a bit of depth, hence my thought about Henderson.
