Pies to use Longmuir money to improve medical department
by Jake Niall 12 Nov 2019, 2.12pm

Collingwood are diverting money from their coaching division in order to put more resources into their medical, rehabilitation and conditioning regime, in recognition that the club's injury toll requires improvements.

The Magpies have not replaced key assistant coach Justin Longmuir, the new senior coach at Fremantle, and are re-deploying money saved (under the soft spending cap on football) from their coaching panel into physiotherapy and medical/conditioning after another strong season in which key players missed stretches of games.

Collingwood's review of their conditioning and injury-management found that there was a need for the players to have more access and potential contact hours with the club's physios, medicos and specialists.

In a post-season in which they have had little involvement in player trades and will have only three later selections in the national draft, this greater resourcing of injury management stands as probably Collingwood's most significant change.

Well, how amazing!! The club has finally woken up to the fact that we have an injury issue. Only took them about five seasons to acknowledge this, but hey, better late than never! Wink

It's interesting that Niall suggests that "injuries arguably costing them the 2018 premiership, when they did not have a bona fide key defender to man West Coast's tall forwards and had to play an undersized Tyson Goldsack, who was returning from a knee reconstruction, on Josh Kennedy".

What’s most concerning in the report is that they have identified the players need more access to rehab resources. How difficult could that have been to establish after several years of repeat occurances.
Is it just me or does that smack of incompetence and amateurism.
IF that report is true, then I almost wish that wasn’t the ( supposed ) solution to the problem.
Oh well, better very very late than never, I suppose.

They got what —one player (guy from Sydney) but shed Wells, Goldsack and delisted Murray to name three so would think they would have some 💰💰

Yep, but are the proposed changes they're undertaking more to do with just helping with the cure (as in quicker recovery times), rather than prevention of certain types of injuries in the first place?

Yep, although this is a positive step, it would seem far more cost-effective and beneficial to both individual players and the team in the long run, if the club looked into why so many injuries happen in the first place.

Jake Niall reports that " Collingwood's review of their conditioning and injury-management found that there was a need for the players to have more access and potential contact hours with the club's physios, medicos and specialists".
Hardly a startling revelation is it and it must have been a very cursory review, if this is all they came up with (which of course we are not privileged to know). However, I would still much prefer a thorough, expert, external review to look at a whole range of factors in addition to contact time with the medical staff . Rolling Eyes

Also they will have the same rehab resources but more hours. How will two hours of physio instead of one hour cure everything?

It might mean the money will be spent on injured players making more trips to the German witch doctor deep in a mystical Bavarian forest (think of Ben Reid and JDG as Hobbitts and the Holden Centre as the Shire).

News today is that the veracity of a statistical method called Magnitude-Based Inference (MBI) developed in 2006, and since then wildly popular with sports scientists, has been called into doubt.

Cold water poured on scientific studies based on 'statistical cult'.
https://www.brisbanetimes.com.au/national/cold-water-poured-on-scientific-studies-based-on-statistical-cult-20191108-p538t6.html

Quote: "In traditional statistics findings are considered to be accurate when there is only a 5 per cent (or less) chance of them being a 'false positive'. The MBI method allows results to have up to a 50 per cent chance of being a false positive and lets scientists make big claims based on studies of just a few people – usually about 10."

Wonder whether the treatment regimes applied to injured Collingwood players since 2006 have been based on sports science research tainted by the dubious MBI methodology.

I used the money I saved from not taking tolls on the Bolte Bridge to pay the speeding fine I got going the other way (West Ring Road).

Life is funny.

Upon first reading your post Presti35 I thought you said you'd "saved money from not throwing trolls off the Bolte bridge!"

Shocked
