I really thought Grundy's ruck work was superb against Richmond.

In round 19 he did well but Nankervis also did very well against him especially in the last quarter. When they played Grigg in the ruck in round 19 he was still trying to do deft tapouts despite his obvious advantage.

On Friday night everything fell in to place. Compliments to to the Ruck couches and to grundy for executing the obvious: smashing the ball 30 meters to advantage. Grundy obliterated his oppostion. He's matured. No more tapouts to his opponents (or to disadvantage).

Congrats Brodie.

A much more difficult proposition this week vs man mountain Vardy and Lycett who is not too bad. Neither are as good as Grundy but they do all right.

I mentioned Peter Moore's game in the late 70's where we came from 64 points to 7 down against the Tigers. Moore was switched to the ruck, had long run up's at the centre bounces jumped and smashed the ball forward. Put them on the back foot. We got up and won that game.

I too was happy to see that tactic employed because it gets the ball going our way and puts the opposition players under pressure to defend the ball coming at you.

2nd most hit outs by a Collingwood player in a game, ever. Just 1 behind the best (57, also by Grundy, earlier this year). Brodie now occupies the top 3 positions in the most hit outs in a game for Collingwood stat, 8 of the top 10 and 13 of the top 20.

The knock to himself and goal lifted the roof off the Daicos Bar on Friday night!

I'm only just coming good now Smile

He was simply outstanding. Got better as the game wore on. 2 extra special moments:
-the tap to Varcoe on the wing (3rd qtr)
-the tap to (his own) advantage then goal to seal the game. Extraordinary from an extraordinary player

Holey moley that's impressive. Given his age, there won't be room for anyone else on those lists in a few years!

What unfolded against Richmond was essentially a trap that Buckley set up to use against Hardwick that played out flawlessly Friday night. Nankervis is a durable ruckman whose strength is to wear down the opposition ruckman so that Grigg gets an armchair ride against either an innocuous second ruckman or a worn down first ruckman. It means Richmond has an extra runner on the field which is revolutionary in terms of development of the game, as our forward press in 2010.

We destroyed that Friday night, not by doing the obvious which would have been to get the mismatch of have Cox ruck as much as possible agains Grigg, but by having both Grundy and Cox go up in unison against Nankervis, then try to get matchups of Grundy to Grigg and have Grundy bash the ball 20m in the clear whenever Grigg went up against him.

The plan worked like a gem. When Richmond came back at us in the last quarter it was Nankervis who was exhausted, not Grundy, who had had an easy ride with Grigg. Richmond couldnt take advantage of the extra runner on the ground.

Its obvious to the world now why Richmond are recruiting Lynch. Hardwick is a very smart coach. Buckley is doing what he can to keep up with the three other smartest coaches in the competition who are Clarkson, Hardwick and Simpson. Moving Crisp to the half back line last year was a piece of genius. The ruck plan that unfolded Friday night was another piece of genius.

Now to turn to the GF next week. How to deal with the two towers of strength in the WCE forward line, Darling and Kennedy? How to deal with the stopper Simpson will place on Sidebottom?

On Ch 9 Footy Show a few minutes ago Mason was guest and their votes
Mason -9
Grundy 8
Steele- 8
Adams-8

The big American put much of his success to supply and Brodys dominance

Gawns pissweak performance yesterday certainly confirms which ruck should have started in the middle in the A.A team

Its the problem with all of these stupid awards handed out for best delicate pirouette in the home and away season. Gawn got as many votes for flogging nohoper teams without a ruckman as Brodie got for dismantling Gawn on Queens Birthday.

38 hitouts, 7 tackles and the one that really shows that Gawn couldnt deal with Brodie physically - 5 frees to 1, Brodies way.

Every 2nd tv ad has Gawn in it, perhaps he's starting to drink his own bathwater?

Gawn is a bloody good player, but I don't understand why everyone, other than us, thinks he's better that Grundy. This time next week, Grundy will have a new nickname - Norm!

Brody played bloody well, but his tactic of belting the ball against Grigg didn't work as well as it could have.

Richmond always keep players on their defensive side of a stoppage to clean up the hack kick, many of Brody's thumps went straight to a nest of Tigers. If our players knew this was the plan, they didn't set up well for it. Yes it negated the effect of Richmond having an extra runner at the stoppages but what really worked well as mentioned above was the tactic to keep Brody fresh for the last by using Cox in the ruck against nank more.

Brody is a smart bloke who also works hard at his craft, he's already very good at an age when most rucks are still on L plates, and will only get better. There's been ruckmen before him who could run and play as an extra midfielder, basically a ruck rover who takes hitouts, but none have been as physical as he has. He's like a cross between Jim Stynes and Shane Mumford.

There were questions about whether he trained in the lead-up, so he may have been playing injured.

Not sure if it's correct or not, but during the TV broadcast of the game, BT said that Grundy now has the most hitouts by any Collingwood ruckman ever. I'd have thought Len thomson would have that, but maybe Grundy has achieved that already. And to think he's probably got another 6-7 years to go!
