The season is under way. The Pack is 2 and 0, having beaten two divisional rivals (Chicago and Minnesota) in the opening two games. At Lambeau for the Minnesota game, there was a touching farewell to the great Bart Starr. His wife and Starr's (and everyone's) favourite quarterback, Brett Favre, embraced at the edge of the field. How could the Vikings compete with that?

Anyway, the Pats are going along quite nicely (as you'd expect), although Brady is limited in practice this week with a calf injury.

Meanwhile, one of the greats - two-time Superbowl winner, Eli Manning - has finally fallen. After the Giants went 0 and 2 in the first two weeks, Eli has finally been benched and Daniel Jones will take over as starting QB: http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap3000001056006/article/giants-bench-eli-manning-qb-daniel-jones-to-start

In the AFC, there are 4 teams with 2 wins: the Chiefs, the Ravens, the Pats (with a ridiculous +73 points differential already) and the Bills. In the NFC, there are 5: the Pack, the 49ers (OEP, where are you - your team is back on top?), the Cowboys, the Rams and the Seahawks.

Can the N.F.L. Turn a 360-Pound Rugby Player Into a Football Star?

https://www.nytimes.com/2019/09/17/magazine/jordan-mailata-eagles-football.html

"A follow-up email included a link to a video of the player, Jordan Mailata, competing in his sport at the time, rugby. Playing for a professional club called the South Sydney Rabbitohs in his native Australia, Mailata could be seen either plowing over would-be tacklers or causing them to bounce off him at impact. At 6-foot-8 and more than 300 pounds, he looks surprisingly fast in the footage; the few players who manage to stay upright after engaging him struggle to catch up as he churns down the field.
...

When Mailata arrived and was fitted for football gear, the equipment manager asked him how his helmet felt. “Honestly,” he answered, “I don’t know how it’s supposed to feel.”
...

The IMG coaches envisioned him as an offensive tackle, a blocker who clears lanes for running backs and, more important, protects high-priced quarterbacks. His wingspan alone (35½-inch arms) promised to make him hard to get around. His performance in the tests given to offensive linemen — the 40-yard dash, shuttle runs and various agility drills that measure an athlete’s stamina, balance and ability to change direction — put him in the top ranks of the N.F.L.’s offensive-tackle prospects in recent seasons. His body fat was below 20 percent, exceedingly low for a man his size. ...

Offensive tackle, though, is one of the most technically demanding positions in football. It requires size, complicated footwork, a high degree of intelligence and, usually, the acquired wisdom — gained over years of high school and college competition — needed to win the battles against defensive players who come charging across the line of scrimmage. One mistake can cost a team a game — or a season, if the error results in a $30-million-a-year quarterback’s leaving the field on an injury cart.
...

Offensive linemen, in particular, pride themselves on playing through significant injuries, which are inevitable because they play in tight, crowded spaces. Occupational hazards include the constant threat of players who have been knocked to the turf — their own teammates as well as opponents — crashing against their knees, or “rolling up” on them. Few players dream of becoming offensive linemen, and it’s usually not the first position they have played. “You get moved there because you’re too fat or too slow,” Jason Kelce, the Eagles’ center, told me. “That’s the most common route.”

... “You have to know how to use your hands, and the exact right moment to give ground. You can’t always lift a guy off the ground, but you want to change his center of gravity. The sports that have skills that are transferable to playing offensive line are wrestling — I can always tell when a guy has wrestled — and some martial arts, like jujitsu.” In addition to the individual battles, the five offensive linemen must work as a unit to create a gap for a running back to move through or a pocket that gives a quarterback space and time to find a receiver and throw a pass without defenders in his face. “It’s angles,” Kelce says. “It’s triangles. It’s geometry. I don’t want to make it seem like we’re all geniuses, but it’s complicated, man.”
...

“In rugby, everybody gets a taste of the ball,” he says, “but I learned American football’s not like that.”

I wondered why Mailata chose football over rugby, and he told me something that most people who have marveled at the videos of him from Australia might find surprising: He didn’t have much of a future in rugby. ...

Mailata’s coaches told him he would have to lose weight to advance to the Rabbitohs’ first team. “It’s a free-flow game with barely any stoppage,” he says, explaining their rationale. “They thought I couldn’t keep up. I didn’t agree — I was down to 310, and they wanted me to lose 30 more pounds. ...” "

Green Bay decided that they should lose to the Eagles, just to even things up. Once Davante Adams left the ground yesterday, Rodgers had no receivers and failed to score the tying touchdown from a first and goal at the 1 (turned over on downs) and another drive that resulted in an interception from inside the Eagles 5. The interception, as usual with Rodgers, was down to a fumbly receiver popping the ball up to the defender, rather than an errant throw -but they really needed to beat the Eagles after a 10:0 start.

That said, Rodgers has a pretty good record against Dallas. The Pack has won 7 out of the last 8 in this rivalry.

Brady just went past the great Brett Favre into 3rd all-time for passing yards, behind Brees and Payton Manning.

Jay Gruden has been dismissed from his position as Washington’s coach, after their 0-5 start and, in particular, a thrashing at the hands of the Patriots.

Meanwhile, the 49ers are up 14:0 against the Browns, just halfway through the first quarter.

The 49ers have returned the Browns' punt and are at the 38-yard line with 44 seconds to go to halftime. Some more points to come, you'd think.

But 5 minutes into the third, the 49ers score another TD. 28:3, now.
