Post subject: Unpopular opinion: Maynard > Heater | |

The self-declared Weapon has some massive finals scalps, is as tough as Heater, but far more disciplined and team orientated. He'll go a long way and will be a smoky for Captain in the future. _________________ Get back on top. |

Simple - Heater has a premiership medal with the Pies, Maynard does not as yet, so it is Heater for me.
Ask me again in 3 weeks time. |

Like Shaw, i dont think Maynard is captain material.
He is a bull, his kicking skills are absolutely elite. His defensive tag is fantastic and he doesnt take any shit from anyone.
I have commented many times that the Eagles taking out Maynard late in the second quarter of the grand final last year was quite a pivotal moment.... _________________ Ohhh, the Premiership's a cakewalk ....... |

Not sure about the captain role but is a big game player in the mould of Darren Millane - he scares his opponent and has toughness (on the verge of mongrel), skill and surprising creativity . His running to receive against the Cats was a highlight for me.
He will get the shut down role on the opposition's most dangerous small, mid forward but can also take on the bigger guys. _________________ I think therefore I think - I think |

Anyone notice how angry Maynard has played in the last 2 games v the Eagles since the GF? He's just dying to pay someone back for the hit he copped in the guts from Liam Ryan. _________________ ------------

He's our raging bull for sure.
Maybe Heater was a little better in the air, but Maynard is a better, and more reliable, kick. Maynard is also far more disciplined. |

That hit is the one that cost us the flag.Ryan should have ,not only been pinged for that, heshould have been reported for running past the ball and a 50 mtr penalty, giving us a 6 goal lead.Instead the Eagles kicked 2 quick goals from that NON free kick. |

i agree with this. its a no brainer. Maynard is a much more complete player than heater. Heater couldnt kick, wasnt feared physically by opposition players and wasnt as good one on one. He might have been a little better playing off his man than Maynard, but we have those skills covered by every player these days so its not left to one player as much as it used to be.
If i was picking a best 22 and had to chose between the two in their prime, I pick Maynard every day of the week.
And Heater was one of my favorite players. i am not criticizing Heater by this post.
Maynard has become that good.
And for the record, i was the armchair critic who bagged Buckley for persisting with what i thought was a stupid player who happend to have his body type and leg! still remember laughing out loud when buckley told me one night (after i shared my critique of a young Maynard with him) that Maynard would play 250 for us (just wait and see). Been proven wrong a thousand times over. Love Maynard. _________________ Ohhh, the Premiership's a cakewalk ....... |
