Post subject: Where each player is at going into FinalsReply with quote

1. Stevo:

Much publicised return to on weekend in the VFL and hopefully shall be better for the run. Automatic return to the Seniors.

2. DeGoey:

We all know no news is bad news at Magpie land and by the first final, he shall have not played for 6+ weeks. A key addition if we are to go further. Sense, he'll play.

3. Wells:

Sense it is "break glass if necessary" and won't play any part again. Like many, I can't help but be seduced by his first half against the Swans before the inevitable injury kicked in. May have to wait for 2-3 significant injuries to get any chance despite his undoubted abilities.

4. Grundy:

Attention Ned Guy: give him what he needs. He is a staggering player of strength, athleticism, toughness, endurance and consistency. Redemption for 2018 Grand Final performance hopefully drives him.

5. Elliott:

A month ago, I questioned whether he was shot. Has thrived in DeGoey's absence and had 9 shots for goal (NOT ON GOAL) the other night. Keep it up Jamie.

7. Treloar:

In career best form and has benefited with the return of Adams and the emergence of Wills. If he can keep storming out of clearances at hitting chests with his kicking, we shall be better off.

10. Pendlebury:

His calmness and poise has been a continued standout this year. Hopefully his 300th gives us an extra 10% of motivation.

12. Scharenberg:

Unfortunately concussed the other night and has been more than steady since his return. Seemingly taking on the Langdon role to a degree, Matt needs to keep performing and maybe a week to week proposition based on match ups. Deserves some overdue luck though.

13. Adams:

Great to see him back to his best Friday night. His most complete performance since returning and assists Treloar with his in and under performance.

14. Aish:

Apparently on the verge of recovering but think he only offers depth at best.

16. Mayne:

31 possessions, the odd turn of speed and aerobically a revelation since he returned as a winger, Chris shall be vital in congested finals matches.

17. C Brown:

His in-board left foot dart the other night was worth the price of admission. He has dropped off a tad in the last month and hope he hasn't run out of petrol tickets.

18. Varcoe:

Inexplicable decision not to snap with s left foot the other night may be balanced off with his form the previous 3 weeks. With the return of Steele, Stevo and DeGoey shall put pressure on him holding his spot. Week to week proposition.

19. Greenwood:

For the second time (North Melb game too) Greenwood jibbed marking contest early in the game. Strange given his reputation.

21. Phillips:

Best game for a few weeks Friday night. Needs to be stronger in one on one contests that invariably occur during finals contests.

22. Steele:

As a famous singing laureate once vocalised: "you don't know what you've got till it's gone"

23. Roughead:

Mr Versatile showed his wares again the other night and given Moore's hamstrings, his recruitment may be the masterstroke.

24. Thomas:

Kicked two important goals however if you watch him closely, his clanger count, inability to impact contests and poor tackling are genuine causes for concern. Personally, I believe he is vulnerable.

25. Crisp:

Might be our most consistent player and steak knives recruit since Craig Davis (sorry Paul Medhurst). Keep doing what you do.

30. Moore:

Just can't see him having any short-term or long-term future with us. Very sad and predictable.

32. Hoskin Elliott:

A patchy year for WHE but hopefully the dry decks of September allow him to win us a key game in September.

33. Rupert:

Doing what Brayden Sier should be doing. He is almost a rugby player so much is his abilities to work in and under, tackle and keep the ball in. Lock him in for September.

37. Maynard:

Has been excellent the last month and shall be critical against the small Cats forwards amidst others. More goals please.

38. Howe:

A critical part of our defence and a necessary part if we are to progress. Poised for a great September.

41. Mihocek:

The best value for money player in the league and a modern-day Alan Martello whom is playing excellent footy. Stakes are high in September and Geelong's defensive options shall test him.

44. Madgen:

a somewhat revelation the last month. Seems to have thrived on having a set position, a freedom to take on the game and not competing with Moore or Roughead. A week to week prospect though.

49. Noble:

Fast, prolific and a good disposer of the ball, he has been handy the last month since Aish went down.

My team for The Geelong Qualifying:

B: Maynard Madgen Scharenberg

HB: Crisp Howe Noble

C: Steele Treloar Phillips

HF: DeGoey Mihocek Hoskin Elliott

F: Stephenson Elliott Roughead

F: Grundy Pendlebury Adams

ICH: Mayne, C Brown, Greenwood, Wills

EMERG: Varcoe, Thomas, Broomhead, Wells

IN:

Steele
Stephenson
DeGoey

Out:

Moore (injured)
Varcoe (omit)
Thomas (omit)

Welcome your thoughts.

Correction: Jamie had 9 shots for OOB OTF, but failed with a few of them.

But these days all I think about is his hamstrings (and ankles, back, etc.).

Pretty good summary, I think. I reckon we’re looking in pretty good shape right now.

Interesting thread.

Wells played his last vfl/afl game in my view. He is not a viable option anymore.

Thomas is the one on the cusp - last two weeks are much better. Stevo and JDG will return. Moore is a huge question mark. I feel sorry for him but we cannot risk a player who so often fails to play out a match. He is a ripping player so this looks like one of the saddest stories in footy. I think next year is his last chance to make it.

A lot of players are on the upswing which bodes well. I do think Greenwood May be under pressure to hold his spot from Aish. Noble by contrast stats as he has good skills, composure and footy smarts and can lock down on a small - Ablett/Myers; Daniel Rioli or Charlie Cameron.

Given the physicality of finals, surely we'd want Greenwood in the team? He's a hardnut beast who brings some much needed mongrel to our team. Also matches up well with Joel Selwood...

Nice work.
The only question mark I have is how are we going to afford to keep Roughead in the forward line with the quality of opposition key tall forwards we are about to face in September.
I agree with your comments on Madgen, he has been good but I’m not sure we can trust him ( or Shaz ) against players like Hawkins, Lynch, Riewoldt, darling, Kennedy, Allen etc
Obviously Roughy can go back if required but the trick is not get yourself in that position in the first place.
Ideally you would prefer the club was in a position where they could trust either Reid or Moore by the second week of finals ( but that’s not likely )

Our lack of KPP height has become very problematic without Cox, Moore or Reid.

Oh, surely Roughead goes back. De Goey comes back in to the forward line and Madgen likely makes way.
