"The landmark proposal calls for premierships won between 1870 and 1896 to be officially recognised and player records during the “foundation years’’ to be included in the official history of the game.

Since 1897, Essendon and Carlton have won the most VFL/AFL premierships with 16 and Collingwood is second with 15.

Including the foundation premierships, from 1870, would alter the flags leaderboard, putting Carlton on top with 22, followed by Essendon on 20, Geelong 16, Collingwood 16 and Melbourne 15.

The number of South Melbourne/Sydney premierships would double to 10.

The proposal, which has been obtained by the Herald Sun, is the brainchild of former commissioner and current Geelong president Colin Carter."

There's a fair bit more and the suggestion that this is likely to get up.

Ok, it seems its exclusive to HS, but I found a bit on it via FB.

It seems the records from the old VFA will be included, but only before 1897, when the VFL was formed.

This will add several flags to premiership tallies.

It seems it will have to be voted in, and I cant see how Port will accept this after they want their SANFL flags counted all this time. I cant see how Footscray, Hawthorn or North will accept this who won many VFA flags after 1897 before they won a licence into the VFL in the 1920s.

Carlton benefit the most as they will have an uncatchable 22 premierships. Essendon will sit on 20. We'll still be third with 16, but Geelong will be tied with us after being given an extra 7 flags to their tally.

Fitzroy will have an extra flag to their tally. And South Melbourne will be given 5 more to add to the Swans tally.

There is no way the other clubs will want this to be accepted. Except for Carlton of course. Geelong and Sydney may want it approved.

These flags were won in the VFA. All the winning clubs should be proud to have won these flags in the past. They are a part of each clubs history. But they were not won in the VFL, which began in 1897

Sorry guys about not getting links to work.

Thanks to redlight for posting info about it.

It would also include Essendon winning 4 in a row before we did.

This proposal is old, but keeps reappearing every few years.

I've never heard of one dating back to 1870 before.

Seems very popular with Carlton supporters on FB. Everyone else seems to have ill feelings towards it.

Heres one quote that I thought was interesting:

Quote:
So does North Melbourne have to hand back it's gold Centenary Premiership Cup so it can be given to Richmond who won the revised 100th in 1969?

Carter claims the current tallies are wrong. From a club perspective he’s correct, from a competition perspective he’s very wrong.

The right way to acknowledge pre-V/AFL flags is to acknowledge them as such. Ie. Collingwood have 1 VFA flag and 15 V/AFL flags; Geelong 7 VFA and 9 V/AFL flags; Port 34 SA(N)FA/L and 1 AFL flag.

Regardless of how the AFL chooses to rule I’ll only ever consider them in the comps won. Given there’s some chatter from fans (especially those who follow non-Vic sides) that only AFL not VFL flags should count I can’t see a broadening to include the VFA being widely accepted.

Well there you have it.

Will something come of it this time?

You cant just have all these gaps in history. This will change all our head to head tallies. Let me guess, we're two away from catching Carlton and now we'll be something like 20 behind again?

Quote:
Should 1870 be recorded as year one of the competition now known as the AFL, then the game's 150th celebrations would be brought forward from 2046 to 2020.

Again, this was the VFA, not the VFL. I dont see why we should include that. Heaps of clubs won VFA flags after the VFL created its own league.

There's a lot that will change, and this will include current VFL clubs Port Melbourne and Williamstown. And then we have to look at the current VFL, which is the old VFA... all that will need to be re-tallied. And we have a club in both leagues lol.

What a bloody mess this will be.

And the best part is that no one will be able to agree on any of it.

Would I feel different if we were going to be given an extra 6 flags? No. I've always thought of our lone VFA flag as something special. There's a spot for it at Holden Centre and I look at it all the time. It's an important part of our history. But it was not a VFL flag.

Then we're going to hear from Port Adelaide. They'll want their 5928 SANFL flags included. But what if their reserves team wins the SANFL. Does that count too?

The VFL formed its own league which started in 1897. In time, it became the dominate football league in Victoria and eventually the national league that it is today. The VFL was rebranded AFL in 1990.

Couldn't care less, all I'm concerned about is the next flag.
Let ém count whatever they like, does it matter?

Laughing Bet that underneath all this, there is a Carlton supporter that set it all in motion. They have nothing else to do; they won't play finals, some have given up going to matches, have strung together the most wooden spoons this century, have had the most number one picks to no avail etc etc....... they have to find something to warm their hearts!
