Post subject: Best singles of 1969Reply with quote

Everyone's actual favourite songwriter, Sir Raymond Douglas Davies, turned 75 last week.

Rather than just post links to every Kinks song ever to mark the occasion, I thought it might be more challenging to try to find all the good singles from 1969 by absolutely everybody. That is, for those of you too young to understand, songs that were actually released on a two track, 7" record, either from an album (eg, "Victoria", which opens The Kinks' "Arthur") or just as singles that were never album tracks (eg, "Honky Tonk Women, which wasn't on "Let It Bleed", even though it is one of the most famous songs from those sessions). I think there's probably only 4 or 5 songs by The Kinks in the bunch - a certain discipline is imposed by being limited to the songs that were actually intended for airplay.

So, here goes. There's a few in there that people may not know but most of them are still well-known, 50 years later - and some of the songs included are amongst the most identifiable sounds in 20th Century music. It's kind of pot luck - just click a few links and see what happens.

No, they're not in any particular order.

Let me know what I've missed from the single releases of 1969 (apart from "Take a Letter, Maria" and whatever rubbish late middle of the road Elvis was by then annoying children with) and post links.

And, yes, this is the sort of thing that one turns to as a form of distraction when Collingwood plays like that.

Here's my fav single from that year (and probably one of my favourite Moody Blues songs in general):

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yD7r22sjdDM

'Something' by The Beatles is okay, but I'm not a fan of much of the other stuff they were bringing out by then. Oh, and 'Space Oddity' by Bowie is still great.

I've checked a few of them out and pleasantly surprised how many I knew.

As a little kid, the only music was the very occasional playing of a Charley pride or Johnny Cash record on the radiogram. The kitchen radio was fixed on the ABC. The only reason I got given music lessons was the parents used to go to a particular pub each Friday night for a counter meal, there was an old upright piano there and once I'd eaten (at 5 or 6) I'd either go behind the bar and help wash glasses or much around on the old piano.

Only once we got the milk bar in '71 I had a Juke Box to play with, when I could pinch the keys.

Overall, I think you've just created the soundtrack for Guardians of the Galaxy 3.

Thanks. I would have listed it if I'd realised it was released in '69 - I actually thought it came out in '68. But you're quite correct.

Really? I went out and bought To Our Children's etc a couple of years back when you mentioned it somewhere on here. I did listen to it but I have no memory at all of "Watching and Waiting".

Don't much like "Something". Space Oddity is in my list - there are not too many tracks that can boast of having Terry Cox and Herbie Flowers as the rhythm section.

Here's the "B" side: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mytfk3FFa_o

And here's one I did miss - the first track and single from Led Zeppelin I, released earlier in 1969. The first sounds any of us heard of Zep: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BIArJ8OuFR4

It's the final track on the album – perhaps tends to get lost amidst some of the more ambitious pieces on that album (and apparently it totally flopped as a single, so I suspect you were far from the only one who found it unmemorable!). It's grown on me a lot over the years, though, and I particularly like the melancholy, relatively minimalist verse sections and lead-out.
