"In echoes of last season's epic Premier League title race, Liverpool and Manchester City matched each other stride for stride to eke out 2-1 victories on Saturday when both had looked set for shock defeats.

They both trailed 1-0 at halftime...

When the dust settled on a pulsating afternoon, Liverpool's six-point lead remained intact ahead of next weekend's seismic clash with City at Anfield."

"What does it mean? It's a long way back for City

Talk of diving and 'tactical fouls' dominated the build-up to this blockbuster clash but any thought Liverpool may have been rattled by the perceived attempt at mind games was quickly dispelled. Last term, City took four points off the Reds which proved vital in pipping Klopp's men by the narrowest of margins. It is too soon to say City's chances of a third straight title are over, but there is now absolutely no room for error for Guardiola's side.

Fabulous Fabinho justifies Klopp's gamble

With four yellow cards to his name this term, Fabinho has been walking the fabled 'disciplinary tightrope'. Klopp opted to rest the Brazil international in last week's late come-from-behind win at Aston Villa in order to avoid him being banned against City. It was a gamble that paid dividends, with the defensive midfielder lashing home the opener and doing his part to shackle City's midfield.

More Anfield woe for Aguero

For a player with Aguero's incredible scoring record it is remarkable he has now failed to score in eight appearances at Anfield. The Argentina striker had plenty of opportunities to break that duck but was uncharacteristically poor before being hauled off for Jesus in the 71st minute."

BBC stats:

Liverpool have won 11 of their first 12 Premier League games this season and lead the table by eight points - only Manchester United in 1993-94 have had a bigger lead after 12 games of a Premier League season (nine points).

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has lost eight matches in all competitions against Jurgen Klopp - three more than he has against any other manager.

Guardiola has lost more away games at Anfield against Liverpool than he has at any other ground in all competitions (four defeats).

Liverpool are unbeaten in their past 17 home Premier League games against Manchester City (W12 D5 L0) since losing 2-1 in May 2003.

Liverpool v Man City handball: Was this 2019-20 season’s 11mm moment?

https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/50368255

"Just five minutes and five seconds in, City were convinced they should have had a penalty for handball as Bernardo Silva's cross struck Liverpool right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold.

A mere 21 seconds later, they were behind.
...

City immediately protested as on-field referee Michael Oliver waved play on, but the hosts quickly put the incident behind them as they charged up-field.

The result?

Fabinho drilling in a wonderful strike from 25 yards to send Klopp's men on their way following a potentially season-defining 21-second period of play.

After the match, Alexander-Arnold told Sky Sports: "I think it might have hit my arm but it hit Bernardo Silva's first. You have to carry on playing, they complained but you have to keep on playing."

Meanwhile, former City captain Kompany argued play should have been stopped in the Liverpool box, regardless of the final verdict.
...

The call not to award Manchester City a penalty was, according to the Professional Game Match Officials Board, because the appeal for handball against Trent Alexander-Arnold "did not meet the considerations for a deliberate handball"."

How Jurgen Klopp has succeeded at Liverpool where predecessors failed

https://www.telegraph.co.uk/football/2019/11/11/jurgen-klopp-has-succeeded-liverpool-predecessors-failed/

"Klopp has broken that trend of disintegration by keeping his squad together, the long-term deals awarded to key players last season proving more important than new signings, while the Champions League victory brought a momentum lacking in the aftermath of previous Premier League heartbreaks.

Indeed, Klopp’s focus when his squad reconvened last summer was not primarily focused on avoiding a comedown due to the disappointment of finishing second, but more geared to maintaining the hunger after the euphoria of becoming European champions.

The manager’s traditional pre-season address to his squad took place in a cramped, darkened basement room in the Hotel Royal in Evian, the French training camp where Liverpool completed their preparations.

As is often the case with Klopp, his remarks were an improvisation around a theme rather the pre-prepared.

“We must get back on the starting line,” he told his players. “Prepare for a season of adversity. Get ready to go the distance and stick together when the setbacks come, because there will be setbacks.”

Klopp organised a motivational speech by an extreme sports star, the renowned German surfer Sebastian Steudtner, whose expertise on how to deal with stress and anxiety through the use of breathing techniques was deemed useful to inspire the players to keep finding that extra yard.
...

Much credit is afforded Klopp’s assistant, Pep Ljinders, whose meticulous structuring of the calendar to ensure the manager knows exactly where each player is on their training programme - as well as the Dutchman’s ebullient personality which contrasts with the man he replaced, Zeljko Buvac - has made him the perfect addition and complement to the senior backroom team."

How Liverpool employ missile-tracking technology to recruit players and used a mathematical model to hire Jurgen Klopp

https://www.telegraph.co.uk/football/2019/11/11/liverpool-employ-missile-tracking-technology-recruit-players/

"He explained: "The sort of players I really like shine through in the data but don't naturally shine through for your typical football fan or even your typical scout. He's a sort of awkward, ungainly player, or a player who has been overlooked for various other purposes. One of my favourite players is Andy Robertson, who is one of the best left-backs in Europe."
...

"Andy Robertson's problem was his background as much as anything," Graham told podcast host Stephen Dubner. "They [Hull] got relegated from the Premier League and he was the best young full-back in Britain at the time. He was a really strange case of a really attacking full-back playing in a really poor defensive team."
...

"Our owners and me and all my colleagues were huge fans of Jurgen and his Dortmund team in the early 2010s," he said. "They played the most exciting brand of football in Europe and coming from a place really not of financial dominance. They won the German Bundesliga twice at a huge financial deficit compared to Bayern Munich and so he was always one of our dream hires as manager but his last season at Dortmund was disastrous."
...

"So I analysed 10 seasons of Bundesliga performances and Dortmund were the second unluckiest team in that 10-year history. It was just some terrible luck cost Jurgen," Graham said.

In the podcast Graham discussed how Klopp had embraced his work. When it came to signing Salah from Roma for £34 million ($63.79 million), Klopp had to be persuaded. Graham was asked how much the 27-year-old would now be worth in the transfer market and said: "He's not for sale. If we could benchmark him against a recent player that we sold which was Philippe Coutinho to Barcelona your minimum starting bid would be €150 million at which point the answer would be 'no, stop wasting our time'.""

"One of manager Mauricio Pochettino’s many beefs with Tottenham is their failure to pursue Philippe Coutinho in the summer.

Barcelona, who signed him from Liverpool for well over £100million (A$189m), were trying to offload the Brazilian forward on loan.

The Spurs boss had first-hand experience of Coutinho because he coached him when he was in charge of Espanyol.

Poch had taken him from Inter Milan in 2012, signing the player until the end of the season to help them avoid relegation.

And he wanted to sign him again this summer but lost out when Bayern Munich made their move.

Poch has complained endlessly about the need to spend big to bring his V2.0 Spurs up to scratch."

Pochettino sacked. Shocked Shocked

That was quick.

"Jose Mourinho has been appointed as Tottenham’s new manager following the sacking of Mauricio Pochettino.

... Mourinho has signed a contract until the end of the 2022-23 Premier League season."
