Watching the Cats, Eagles and GWS during the first half of the year, I can't help but feel we are lagging fourth in the skill of kicking. That being most key aspects:

* hitting field kicking targets
* kick ins from defence
* goal kicking accuracy
* clanger count
* penetration

* using opposite foot
* kicking under pressure
* general error count
* distance
* finesse

Am sure Champion Data may refute this with their empirical stats, but remember they were the group that said Melbourne had the best list going into 2019. Taking the above criteria into account, I've unemotionally ranked our players into 3 groups: A, B and C, I've come up with this:

A Grade kicks:

* Daniel Wells: watch the Swans game
* Brodie Grundy: rarely stuffs up
* Jamie Elliott: reliable
* Lynden Dunn: wish we could have seen more of it
* J. Daicos: elite on both feet, needs to be given Senior match time
* W. Hoskin Elliott: excellent
* Brayden Sier: Dees match reminded fans of his disposal prowess
* Brayden Maynard: GRADUATED!! Always thumping.. now ACCURATE

B Grade kicks:

* S.Pendlebury: may surprise, but poor set shot at goal & 50m is limit
* Jordan DeGoey: goal kicking accuracy hurts him
* Dayne Beams: excellent on both sides
* J.Stephenson: slight technique issue means prone to thinning them
* Travis Varcoe: great technique but lacks subtlety and finesse hitting chests
* Ben Reid: better field kick than for goal. Prone to the Kernahan floater
* Steele Sidebottom: may surprise but efficiency less than media crow about
* Jordan Roughead: solid, safe and risk mitigatory
* Tyson Goldsack: long thumping kick but lacks short passing finesse
* Tim Broomhead: little seen recently but kicking is his strength
* Darcy Moore: doesn't get much height on kicking
* Rupert Wills: lost a yard or two since coming back from injury
* Jeremy Howe: 90% safe but 10% bites off more than he can handle (2018 Grand Final evidence)
* Brodie Mihocek: only recent inaccuracy drops him to a B. Potential

C Grade kicks:

* Adam Treloar: flawed technique, hooks and slices too often
* Tom Langdon: distance yes but finesse kicking no
* Matt Scharenberg: accurate but too lateral and lost yardage
* Taylor Adams: improved but his inward kick on the 45 costs us goals
* James Aish: lacks penetration, no left side
* Chris Mayne: mitigates flaws with shorter kicking focus
* Callum Brown: struggles to kick it beyond 35 metres
* Levi Greenwood: more nine iron than 2 iron, better in recent times
* Tom Phillips: no right side, prone to floater and needs to practice more
* J. Thomas: no left side and lacks penetration beyond 45 meters
* Jack Crisp: prolific but prone to turnover (see Fremantle game)
* Flynn Appleby: flawed technique
* Ben Crocker: 1/3 shot at goal hurts when you average 10 possessions
* Mason Cox: has seemingly lost 10-15 metres distance since 2017. Accurate though.

Summary:

It's all an opinion game, and obviously we need a greater balance of A's and B's. Additionally, we need to reward (exponents) and penalise (serial offenders) with selection integrity. With the margins between 1st on the ladder and 10th being as close as ever, all round kicking skills may just make or break our 2019 prospects. As usual, welcome constructive feedback and opinions?

A lot of work, thought and time put into that post - can;'t go without a comment.

Interesting read - thanks.

We were spoilt when we had Leon Davis kicking out from fullback. He was a gun at that. Rarely missed a target. Kicked the odd sensational goal as well.

Interesting read disposal efficiency also should be in the limelight too

Pendlebury is one of the best passes of the ball in the AFL, and usually a very accurate goal kicker.

Sidey is the best two-sided kicker of the ball in the AFL.

Great work and I agree with most although I would make the following changes.
Pendlebury is definitely A grade and very rarely wastes a possession. True he doesn't kick a lot of goals nor is a long kick but is still our best player and makes his touches count more often than not.
Broomhead is an A grade kick but unfortunately we just haven't seen enough of him.
Scharenberg another A grade but again haven't seen enough.
Aish, Mayne, Thomas and Crisp are all definitely above C. Aish is being played out of position and therefore fluffing a few under pressure. Mayne rarely wastes a possession and Thomas is another one playing out of position. Small forwards sometimes go for the miracle shot because they havent touched it for a while. Crisp has improved his disposal and become one of our most reliable and consistent players. Can still turn it over but his run and breaking the game open more than covers that.

Believe in 2011 when he kicked in from full back he went at 166/167 kicks to advantage after a behind

That’s interesting and I wonder about something Treloar said on 360

Prior to the players heading off for a bye break the players met Bucks one on one to talk thru their season so far and if it was done correct it be a two way

Player saying where he felt he was then Bucks laying out what coaching staff felt what he could do to improve his game —-obviously kicking would be one
an avenue I would hope was front and centre

INXS great effort mate the only one I wouldn't agree on totally is Scharenberg

Prior to doing his knee last season he was going at over 80% by foot (not to be mistaken with DE)

He was averaging over 400m gained per game as well
Both stats put him in the above average range

When drafted he was rated elite in kicking and many judges had him in the top 6-10 players drafted over the previous 10 years

Kicking is what you learn b4 you enter AFL pressure

You then are more likely to kick well either under pressure or when you see a team mate in a marking position in front of you —-Shaz fits that

I saw Aish playing SANFL and he appeared at 17 elite and mostly still is but at times he miss kicks under pressure

I'd have Chris Mayne (field kicking not goal kicking) as A grade.
He rarely misses a target and is very good under pressure.

Which makes me wonder why his kicking for goal is so poor.

And yet Chris kicked almost 200 goals (196) over 172 Freo games

I agree completely regarding Sidey, But I get very nervous when Pendles has a set shot. His set shots are sub-par.

I tend to agree - I certainly wouldn't have Mayne as a C grade kick (at least a B, possible an A).

I think the call on Sier being an A grade kick is far too premature - there is a very limited sample size for one, and second, he's a great long thumping kick - but whether they hit their intended target is somewhat questionable - I recall many of his kicks from last year being rushed and kicked into space - not bad, but not able to be called an A grade kick, yet...

Sharenberg isnt a good kick but he is efficient because he is a smart footballer and plays within his limitations. By the way, Adams and Aish have both also learnt this skill and they make fewer mistakes than they used to.

Sharenberg has an elite footy brain and chooses the safe option that is within his skill set.

He definitely does not have the "one of the best in the league - absolutely sublime and ELITE" passing skills that Pendlebury possesses. Such an embarrassing list compiled in this thread. Total nonsense.

In Sier's only game this year, he had 9 kicks + 14 handballs. And yes, that's how I remember most of his kicks too - quick kicks under some pressure (sometime less pressure than he realises) - he may not have turned it over directly in the Melbourne game, but that doesn't make him an A grade kicker. Anyhow, let's hope his decision making and disposal efficiency has improved this year - then he may become the valuable player he threatens to be.
