Agree with those who have said that this loss might have been a necessary evil. Our ball skills today were deplorable. We could not hit targets by hand or by foot. The entire team was unable to handle the ball cleanly. Our ball movement was clearly inferior to Fremantle's. They ran the ball through the corridor brilliantly at times, which we never did today. It was a very poor day for us, and a timely signal that the level we have been playing at is not satisfactory.

Good summary. Very dirty day. Just hope we can turn things around next week...

bucks needs to make some decisions on who are our midfielders going into the second half of the season. the first half so far has been next to unreliable. their not working hard enough and they're god dam s l o w .

todays game had no system to it. the players didn't go the hard ball, pulled away from contests and wanted no contact. soft. didn't want contact.

we played the old brand of footy, pre 2017, the kind of footy Ben Reid used to play in and have no impact in. he has to be moved on. but he shouldn't be the only one.

bucks will know exactly what he needs to do. that im sure off.

I forgot to add that the defence was great.
The midfield and attack .....pretty ordinary.

Agree, the defence were really good - Roughy, Howie, Moore, Maynard, Aish (Crisp appeared to me to have an off-day for his standards).
Forward line was reasonable. It was the mid-field where we lost (Pendles aside).

We were well held. Our prime movers were nullified to a fair degree. This is a learning experience. Better to lose this week than next. We might come out angry next week and smash into Melbourne like we did last year.

Hopefully. The issue is though we haven’t smashed anyone all year. Unlike Cats and especially GWS. Some worrying signs that’s for sure.

We smashed Brisbane, we smashed Port, we mostly smashed Richmond. But OK.

Ok I’ll give you Brisbane and Tigers ! 😁

Too many passengers. Today, apart from Pendles, midfielders look slow, don’t chase, no defensive pressure, poor clearances, hang out, overuse footy, poor skills, too many turnovers.
Beams, Varcoe, Thomas, Brown etc. Need to find some form in the VFL.
Why not reward our best players from the VFL?
Give Daics, Quanor a go(?)
Need some hard ball gets / clearance guys - eg Adams, Sier when fit and ready.

Our defenders kept us in the game.

Roughy - 17 disposals @ 94.1% D/E

Howe - 21 @ 95

Maynard - 24 @ 87.5

Greenwood - 17 @ 88.2

Crisp - 27 but scrambled a lot, so D/E was low: 52%

One thing I observed several times today was Howe and Moore spoiling each other and going for the same intercept mark too often.

Played shit footy for 4 weeks and got out of it with three wins. Not a bad result.

Informative stats, Donny. Thanks.

One positive thought that went through my mind watching today's game is that Greenwood has found a spot that really suits him. Okay, so he wasn't a stand-out like last week, but his attack on the ball is just ferocious, he's a strong body, he can mark cleanly and he delivers up-field really well. Plays so much like Maynard.

yes Damien hence why I wrote that Moore plays like a veteran as he sees that howe likes to be the team leader of the back line and backs off.
howe needs to be mindful we have Moore and roughy to also take the high ball.
there are some egos to sort out down there.

Today's general lack of effort is emphasised by the fact that our top two for tackle numbers were Pendlebury and Sidebottom. That sums up our problem - our best footballers are having to do the grunt work, as well because the guys who should do the grunt work can't because they lack pace and can't close the opposition down.

big reason why Tay Adams is such a huge player for us.

Our turnovers killed us. That's because we didn't handle the Docker pressure.

It must absolutely ring alarm bells for the Coach that our ruckman is having the best season so far of his best-Collingwood-ruckman-ever career (with another 47 hitouts today in a 54-14 thrashing at the bounces, his season tally is already the 11th highest recorded for Collingwood - and his hitout tally today sees him with 14 of the top 15 efforts for most hitouts in a game for Collingwood) but we still can't get our hands on the ball around the packs. Our top clearance players today were Pendlebury and Grundy (of course) and Crisp, each with 6. We don't actually want Grundy and Crisp getting clearances - but no-one else much seems to be able to get their hands on the footy at the stoppage.

Not sure if it's egos so much, as just plain seniority. Howie is after all the most experienced player and still a magnificent mark. Darcy perhaps more damaging at ground level, his wonderful athleticism aside? He held up play on numerous occasions this afternoon.

^ Grundy was OK today, but his strength was clearing the ball himself, his deficiency, tapping the ball to the advantage of a team mate.

Been poor for the three previous matches and we couldn't get it done for a fourth.

Need some inside midfielders desperately.

Treloar and Beams not good enough, Treloar especially.
