Swanny played his final game at the MCG for collingwood, and it looks most likely Wells has as well.

both players having an opponent put there full weight ontop of a foot/knee and the ground not absorbing enough of the impact.....

or am i just being superstitious?

Considering how much they water it before games, I doubt it's the hardness of the turf that's responsible, despite the seemingly overwhelming evidence of 2 injuries in 7 years

Sorry, 2 AFL injuries in 7 years and 1 soccer injury - which was in the wicket area. Wells was in the forward pocket near the boundary I believe

Hard in the middle, soft on the edges, probably because they are excess watering the pitches to try to make them soft enough. Different soil/clay in there for cricket wickets. The tops of blades of grass were visible next to players' boots on the telecast, which is not normal in Melbourne where it's cut shorter. Checkers seemed to struggle to get his normal kicking action going, slightly unusual given he played in the VFL. Seemed mushy and slowed everything down and impacted the physics of the ball. Of course it's a winter sport, but it was something different that our guys needed to adjust to, the Swans were revelling in it.

Fish Creek Oval has had less injuries than the SCG I was informed of this by two blokes at the pool table in the Fishy Pub.

The difference in winter climate between Sydney and Melbourne played a large part in the development of the different football games in the 1850's and onwards. Despite Melbourne's dreary winter reputation, Sydney is much wetter and therefore has much softer grounds. As the games were being played mainly by professionals (doctors, lawyers, accountants, etc) who worked a half day Saturday, and couldn't afford to be turning up to work with broken bones, the Melbourne game emphasised more free flowing and less tackling than the Sydney version of the Rugby game.

It's hard to tell from a TV screen, but the SCG looked soft and the grass longer. Could be heavy legs at the end of the game?

Having gone to the game and having tickets close to the fence , the grass is definitely not cut as short as the MCG or Marvel.

Had a ground attendant replacing divots at quarter and 3 quarter time, similar to what you see at Flemington/Moonee Valley after each race.

It was also deceptively dewy which given the weather was around 19 degrees was also a bit strange and not something you would experience in Melbourne at that temperature.

The condition of SCG says loads about the Sydney Swans as an organisation and as John Longmire as a coach. That ground played like it had the sprinklers on it all afternoon in the lead up to the game. There was no reason for players to be dropping marks and slipping over in those weather conditions. Obviously was an attempt to bring us down to their skill level, interesting to see where this instruction came from.... Could this have led to Wells' injury? Already been one knee injury in the A-League due to that crap surface and all further soccer matches cancelled at the SCG after that particular knee injury.

If any other club was to put their hand up and said they wanted to play their games on a ground with those dimensions they would be told in no uncertain terms what to do with their proposal.

A ground that small promotes crap/negative footy and this is compounded with the surface dished up in the state that it is, and then they drown it on top.
