Post subject: Not recruiting May and LynchReply with quote

A week is a long time in footy. Both these guys have lots of time to turn it around.

But right now, it seems the two former Suns and key position players have caused somewhat of a problem for their new clubs who were both top 4 last year.

Melbourne are almost no chance to make the top 8. Richmond should still be able to wrestle their way into the top 8, but the top 4 might be too tough a task.

Collingwood were linked to both players. It seems that May is the biggest issue right now with the injuries and the "please explain" he's had to give his new club. Lynch has been ok and is second in the goal kicking. And this article is only Matthew Lloyds opinion. But Richmond gave up a lot of depth and that is showing. They have uncovered a few young players in Short, Balta, and a couple others, but is Lynch going to get them back into top 4 contention?

May turned up to preseason training at melscum out of shape and didn't think anything of it. No one at the gold ever really cared and it would explain why they're such a rubbish and unprofessional team. I'm glad we didn't get him. He's been caught out drinking again and been given a please explain. He would've cost us quite a bit as well, and you can argue that beams cost us a lot as well but at least he has an immediate impact and is playing good consistent football.

Lynch on the other hand has done ok since going to richmond but they gave up a lot for him in order to free up salary cap space. Jury is still out but he seems the likely of the two to do well. May just seems like he's taking the piss.

Looks like May was on the turps on the weekend, dodged a big bullet there.

Lynch has been good but they gave up a lot of depth players to fit him in as mentioned and now that they are suffering injuries for the first time since their golden run started, the cupboard seems let’s say not quite stocked up.

Said at the time May was a risk and I stand by it. He can'r run with quick leading forwards. Lynch will find out now Jack is out that he has the best defender on him that it won't be easy.

In fairness to Lynch, he virtually had no preseason and was a free agent ( albeit on big money )

May is simply overrated and very undisciplined both on and off the field. He was even suspended after his first game with them
He also came as a significant trade exchange. Guaranteed the Dees would like their time again. Who knows, maybe they would still have Hogan if they hadn’t pursued May.

Yep, it seems we dodged a bullet with May. Especially with how well Roughy has gone.

Lynch may be costing Richmond a fortune, and some depth, but at least he's performing. And he doesn't seem the type to turn up to pre season out of shape or get on the turps when in rehab.

Dodged a bullet with May, I'm happy with Roughy as the lockdown back and a fit Darcy as the intercepter. If Dunne was fit, May wouldn't get a game for us.

Lynch would've been an upgrade on Checkers in ability but not in workrate

To be fair to May he was having a beer, so what?. Some bozo with a phone decided to become a keyboard dobber. I hope one day whoever that mongrel is snaps the wrong photo and someone punches his lights out.

^ Maybe it's his club at fault, not the snapper.

Barrett thinks so:

"In the club's eyes, May drinking at a Richmond bar was a bad look given his poor start to life as a Demon after eight years with Gold Coast.

I didn’t view it that way. In my eyes, the Demons' stance on May is control gone mad.

The bad look in my eyes was a football club telling an employee that he can't have a legal and responsible outlet to his clearly stressful life."

Gleeson:

"Steven May did little wrong on Sunday. In fact he did nothing wrong.

He might have done something wrong in not being fitter when he arrived at the club as a highly paid recruit but that was not his offence on Sunday. On Sunday his offence was about appearance not reality. May is not playing and that is the real offence to those who wish to take it."

Exactly! A few beers, big deal.
On the other hand the AFL shields drug users who have tested positive under some strange 3 strikes rule. The lunatics have taken over the asylum.

Totally agree with both of these – "control gone mad" is the perfect phrase (and Gleeson's summary is even more spot-on). Of course, May's far from the first AFL player to fall victim to these draconian "leadership group" rules, but it's still stupid and over-the-top to place such restrictions on players, particularly injured ones. And sad to think that a coward with a smartphone surreptitiously photographing someone without their consent gets to take the moral high ground over a player who is literally doing nothing wrong.

I completely agree it’s a non story storm in a tea cup BUT all clubs have a strict “ no drinking in rehab “ policy because alcohol inhibits / dilutes the recovery compounds in the blood flow. The no drinking policy stems from medical feedback, not because clubs just want to control players after hours movements.
The real issue here is the club would be furious that May had no regard for a policy that’s designed to get him back playing footy ASAP.

If it’s good enough for everyone else on the list, then it’s good enough for May to tow the line also.

But as Gleeson points out, mental health is just as important as "recovery compounds" if not much more so, and if having a few beers with friends helped May relax and deal with stress then that, too, may have a physical benefit. Too often, football clubs take extremely reductive approaches to these issues.

[MFC Football Manager Josh] Mahoney said Melbourne didn't enforce a no-drinking policy, asking only of players to act like "adults".

Quite possibly .... or maybe he’s just a knob who thinks he’s bigger than the club. Probably somewhere in the middle, lies the truth.
