2003 (Brisbane) 2011 (Geelong) 2018 (west Coast)
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
For me it is a no contest, 2011, we were by far the best side playing a team we should have walked over the top of. Such a wasted opportunity.
2003 - Brisbane were one of the all time great sides. yes we probably should have won, but it is hard to over come champion teams.
2018 - injuries killed us, plus i think the fact we even made it (a bit like 2002) actually more proud of the team then what the result was. _________________ "To know nothing of events before your birth, is to forever remain a child" - Cicero (Roman Lawyer/Senator) 46 BCE. |

2003. I felt proud of the team in 2002 and 2018, because in both cases we'd played in a grand final nobody thought we'd make, and while it was disappointing to have lost such a close game (probably more so in 2018), at least we provided a good contest and left plenty of room for optimism. 2011 was a huge let-down, but the fact we'd won the year before made it much easier to take.
2003, on the other hand, was just a miserable day. That's one grand final that I'll never revisit under any circumstances. _________________ "Every time we witness an injustice and do not act, we train our character to be passive in its presence." – Julian Assange |

For me 2018 was the game we should not have lost. Yes unexpected to get there, but so were the Eagles. We had them 5 goals to 0 on our home ground.
Lions in 02 were a good team, but we had them late in the last quarter. I can still see Bucks streaming out of the middle and kicking it long to Tarrant who was literally raped by Darryl White right in front of me!!
We all know what happened after that. Presti breathes on Lynch, free in front of goal to put them in front. Then Akamanis kicks the winner.
Gut wrenching - both 2002 and 2018 were lost with less than 5 mins remaining. |

Agreed, but both have Prelim wins that almost make up for the Grand final loss. That '02 Perlim, maybe qualifying final win? is one of my all time favourite games.....i have never seen us written off so badly by the press as that game....it was just Port Port port.....by how far was the only question. The Ben Johnson tackle on i think it was shaun burgoyne? won us the game....and actually i still really look back at that 2002 side as a real team of champions.
That is why 2011 hurts most, we were just by far the best team all season bar really the one game that mattered.....other grand final losses have explanations and finals games that make you proud.... 2011 has none of that we were almost beaten by Hawthorn in the prelim, and then went to water in the second half of the GF, unforgivable.... 1970 bad! _________________ "To know nothing of events before your birth, is to forever remain a child" - Cicero (Roman Lawyer/Senator) 46 BCE.

yeah, maybe i am strange? The game burnt for about 5 mins then i got over it. I actually came away with allot of respect for West Coast, they also made it the hard way with allot of injuries and were on the road at the MCG...(could you imagine if we had to travel to Optus for that game? i think we would have been belted) We should have built the MCG into a fortress but didn't, we let a 5 goal lead slip....so in some ways that is our failure....but like a isay the fact we made it from nowhere is a real achievement.
Don't get me wrong i will never willingly re-watch that game. I was also getting mighty sick of the game replays in the lead up to the West Coast - Collingwood game. _________________ "To know nothing of events before your birth, is to forever remain a child" - Cicero (Roman Lawyer/Senator) 46 BCE. |

It always hurts badly to lose a Grand Final.
But for me a big loss is easier to take than a narrow loss. In a big loss all we can say is "we weren't good enough."
In a narrow loss it's" if not for that umpiring decision, if not for that missed goal, if not for that injury".... and so on. We can agonise over it forever. I still think that Tuddy should have kept running into goal at the end of the 1966 Grand Final, instead of kicking it long to Bob Murray! |

I hate those last minute loss,s
1964 when big Gabbo gets ball fwd of centre and not one player in front
Runs right up to ten yard (yep that was it then) square and goals
From bounce Neil Crompton follows our rover and flukes a goal-4pt loss
1966 and Ted Potter hand pass goes to a St Cunder player who kicks point
siren and loose by that point
1979 the Harmes ball from out of bounds back into field of play —hand pass to Scum in goal square—loose by 4 and siren soon after _________________ I'm not arguing--just explaining why i am right |
