Port aren't a joke but aren't as strong as people think
Look at there 2 losses to Richmond and Lions
Both took them on at there own game and had success
Port like to move it quickly when they have it and slow you down when you have it
Pretty simple really similar to what we try to do
There defence is ordinary really and our forwards should find space
We need to be hard at it around the ball and tackle pressure all over the ground
There forward line has several bows to it and they like us rotate many mids through it
We need to look really hard at who plays on who down back
Interesting that Langdon has played 5 games against Port and his direct opponent has kicked 28-6 that's over 5 goals a game
It's due to there speed they isolate him on a quick player and that player has a field day (has been both Gray's on a couple occasions)
Finding speed to counteract there's is important
This could be a good role for Pendles using his smarts and run off as a link player
Westoff gets up the ground a lot so Moore needs to hold him
They will double team Grundy with Lycett and Ryder like west coast do so we need to be hard around the contests
I would try something really different and start Cox in the ruck and Grundy as a mid on the ball
Yeah I know sounds weird but he is great at the clearance and it will throw there plans out the window

My side for this week would be

B. Crisp. Roughhead. Howe
HB. Maynard. Moore. Pendles
C. Treloar. Phillips. Sidey
HF. Stephenson. Checkers. Beams
F. JDG. Elliott. WHE.
R. Cox. Grundy. Adams
Int. Aish. Varcoe. Langdon. Thomas

Let's see how they would control WHE Elliott JDG Stephenson running around the forward line
Sidey to play off the back of the centre square and get back to help where required
Use Aish and Varcoe to keep our small backs fresh for running with there forwards

Good analysis Qldmagpies.

Aish back in will help and maybe Elliott too. Out goes Greenwood and Brown?

We need some coaching smarts to work at the Docklands and counteract any Port trickery. I like starting Cox at the centre bounce as Lycett seems to neutralise Grundy most times they play against each other.

This is a massive game for the Pies. If we win it we go 5:2 and will be entrenching ourselves in the top 4. The following week is Carlton which we should win.

What we need to counter Port Adelaide is a 25-disposal, pacy, running half-back who kicks at 80% disposal efficiency, can compete in the air with the top players and has more in-game experience than Buckley and Pendlebury. GWS has one of those. Perhaps we should trade a slow mid for him? F^%^! F^%^! F^%^! F^%^!

Brown must stay. He is going to be an out and out star - we can't afford to have him held back just as he is finding his feet. Three weeks in a row, he has been one of our most prominent players when the game was there to be won. He's played 17 games. After he's played 30, he'll kick every one of those goals that he's missing at the moment.

There is some small possibility that Reid (who was our best in the VFL yesterday by a considerable margin) might come in for Mihocek (who was putrid on anzac day).

Our home game, at Marvel Stadium. Thanks AFL.

Port have their tails up, this could go their way.

I thought that Reid might come in for Cox if he is injured

Just went to the Port Adelaide site to find out why (surgery - broken hand - 4 weeks) and couldn't help but notice that the great Matthew Lokan, a rising star nominee for us in 2003 (sadly, he was pipped at the post for the honour that year by Sam Mitchell), is coach of their SANFL team: https://afltables.com/afl/stats/players/M/Matthew_Lokan.html

In Elliott out it’s out of either greenwood or brown or even Varcoe who needs to work on his speed and get some form

If Aish and Elliott both return, then I'd be dropping Greenwood and Thomas.

Although I don't rate him highly, Brown is doing enough to keep his spot and getting dropped now would dent his confidence and development. Greenwood is a depth player now. Thomas is a handy player, but has not been getting enough of the ball to keep his spot. Mihocek had a poor game on ANZAC day, but has been playing well, so he will definitely hold his spot imo.
