Winning ugly is just as important as winning pretty. To hang on yesterday and get the four points was a great sign for our character. This side has the right stuff to go all the way this year.

Spot on.

I've read quite a lot of comments here and I agree with many of them.
But...
Focus on the word 'win' here.
WE WON!!!
Ugly, but a win is a win.

Also, I appreciated every Collingwood players effort, no exceptions. I am a little worried when we turn on our own in these circumstances. The collective effort led to a great team win.

I'll take the four points and look forward to next weeks game.

You can't have a thrashing-Brisbane win every week.
A win is a win! However ugly it is, it is so so so sweet!
Go Pies!!!

This time, unlike the GF we were able to hang on, but is hanging on really the way we want to win high stakes pressure games like these?

we are not streets ahead of the competition

Well, despite the opposition coming back at us, which I expected they would, it took them two and a bit quarters to almost get us and we didn't have a huge lead to begin with, in modern football terms. This was a really gutsy win and a huge effort, which showed we can handle what another good team throws at us. A very important attribute in my book.

No, we are not streets ahead of the competition and if anyone expects that we are/should be, then they are not taking into account the evenness of the competition so far this season.

Yep we got in front and maybe they thought “we’ve got this” I don’t know if it the case
Against a finals bound Cats or improving Tigers wouldn’t have had time to re put the pedal to the metal but more likely be 3&3

Talent is there but is the fierce determination we had last yr

And what of Sidebottom's tremendous bump on Zaharakis as he was about to swoop on the ball in their last gasp chance in the middle of the ground with a few seconds remaining?

Yes, it's those basic football efforts that really count the most in the end. Also, Darcy's great punch forward from a tight marking pack including Daniher in the final minute or so was telling as well.

The 1% ‘ers that coaches talk about and awareness too

How young Cal a mere AFL baby with his shots on goal in dying stages taking full allotment of allowed time — that awareness and Cox little effort to help
WHE added to Sidey smarts the good things you want when the battle rages

I always mute the whole game now, if I watch it live. Lets face it, if u go to the footy u don't have some guy inside ur head telling u what is happening u can see it for yourself.

This is a valid point Piesnchess. I guess it may just be conditioning that has me listening to the commentary. It is useful if a player goes off injured or something controversial happens. A telecast with the occasional caption would be a good option!! Laughing

As only a couple have correctly alluded to, Essendon were at their best yesterday. Big stage, big game and a chance for some unlikely redemption.
They would have beaten most teams yesterday but they didn’t beat Collingwood.
They were quick, took chances and kicked straight but they still didn’t win.
A bit of perspective please. That was a solid win !

With us winning, it's gonna be a great Orthodox Easter this weekend now, starting with Good Friday today.

Last year we were much more accurate. Missing shots on goal allowed Geelong in the game in the second quarter / after half time in the first round.

Missing shots also allowed Essendon in the game this week: we ought to have been 6.3 not 4.5 in the that first quarter.

Stil, we got the four points and we're not playing great footy yet: there were some glimpes of good footy but we need to be more assured than we've shown.

Bellchambers played a ripper of a match for them and while we dominated the tapouts at half time it was 7 -7 in terms of hitouts to advantage; I'm not sure what it was by the end of the match

We must arrest the centre clearance losses. Essendon were very good in that respect & this contrated with our less than adequate peformance in the clearances.

...

Redemption from what? Their mauling by GWS? They had a big win the previous week, so they weren't on the rebound.

I admit JDG has been awresome round goal but getting Elliot and the recently fit WHE in that part of the ground on a repetitive basis—oh and not excluding Stevo they should shoulder the scoring

Then with Tay an JDG that could increase our grunt and centre bounce clearance

Mitch Brown fractured his wrist in the game.

When Roughead & M. Brown were running for a ball at HBF they both looked very slow. I'm not sure we'd want Roughead on a mobile opponent.

I don't think character was in doubt last year. We need more than that. If it's close at the end in a GF there's a good chance luck or the umpires will take the game away. When it's that close it's pretty much a coin toss.
