https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2019/may/02/john-kapoor-opioids-billionaire-founder-guilty-of-bribing-doctors-to-prescribe

"The convictions will spur demands for executives of other opioid makers to be held to account for an epidemic that has claimed about 400,000 lives over the past two decades."

This is how the politics of big business works, I suppose - you look for an external enemy, demonise it, point everybody's attention at it and just keep deflecting while the real enemies within are multi-billionaires who do their worst and profit obscenely from it.

Basically same marketing strategy as that used by the manufacturers of illicit drugs, so treat em the same way. Confiscate their assets and dump em in gaol.

A good place to start would be to get people to stop seeing doctors as infallible gods who have the patients best interest at heart. Sure, the good ones are out there but when there's all the perks and pleasures of getting in bed with the pharma companies its understandable that some are happy to push the meds unnecessarily.

People who go against big pharma, whistle blowers etc tend not to do too well in life, it's amazing that one of the scumbags finally got convicted.

Incredible. Surely the doctors should face prison time too?

^

FWIW, public health in Victoria at least have things in place to reduce doctors susceptibility to bribes from pharma companies.

But yes, in Australia I'd like to think that if Doctors were found to have been prescribing drugs not based on best patient need but on kick backs from Pharma companies, AHPRA would pull their licence to practice at minimum

80,000 Deaths. 2 Million Injuries. It’s Time for a Reckoning on Medical Devices.

Just read the first few paragraphs. Horrific.
