This was our problem in the home and away season last year and it appears to be our problem again this year.

3 wins vs teams out of 8, 2 losses vs teams in the 8.

At the end of the day, this cost us the grand final last year (We lost to a team in the 8 on grand final day too!!)

Worrying trend.

Since, according to you, percentage does not matter, there are currently 11 teams in the "8" and three more just outside. We have beaten two of the nine bottom teams in the "8". Shocked

percentage doesn't matter (since winning flags is all that matters and percentage is proven to neither help nor hurt your chances).

but the 8 is the 8!! how can the 8 be the 12. that is really dumb.

If we wanted to take this stuff seriously (I assume you don't) we'd judge the "8" on what David calls the "form ladder" (power rankings).

The 8 now has no practical significance (finals aren't next week!) and gives limited info on who the good teams really are (for the reasons given in that thread).

oh my god. David's form ladder. Easily the dumbest thing I have ever seen. The most meaningless analysis I have ever seen. does anyone actually read it?

Its like someone keeping track of our best 22 and simply adjusting it each week to select the 22 named each Thursday evening....

maybe the only thing to rival it for total stupidity is the inxs88 supposed "analysis" of each player every week.... Where in about two thousand words, he is able to give us as much interesting information as we get from a scan of the best players list in the game summary.....

Power rankings are all over the place in all sorts of sports. They are as good or bad as the judgement of the people (or computers) making them. No more or less.

yes, they are a US born thing (usually named after a sponsor) as a way to get people who cant get enough to read the same info a different way

But that "same info" is not the ladder when it's 1/5 of the way into the season.

I assume this is not a serious thread, but anyway...

We've only played 2 teams in the current 8, with the Eagles just holding onto 8th spot.

After 5 rounds it's logical that any team we lose to is more likely to be in the 8 than those we beat. Had we beat the Eagles, they would be outside. Lose to the Tigers and they are in, same for Brisbane.

As we proved last year, wins are wins. Get enough to make the 8, or more particularly the top 4 and you have a chance at a flag. In a tight season there's really no such thing as "quality" of wins. Win enough and get to the finals in the best shape possible. That's the game.

of course, it not serious.

But it is funny that the trend is starting again (even if it doesn't actually mean anything). I remember last year, when i first raised this thread in about round 5, people used these very same very logical points. Yet somehow, by round 20, i think we were undefeated outside the 8 and won barely any (if any) against top 8 teams.

^True. But if you disregard eureka’s threads, like most people do, it would be in the top 10

After all, it’s just another statistical “stating the bleeding obvious” thread without adding any analysis or advice

Ahhh... A continuation of the thread from last season that went something like, "our problem is that we can't beat anyone above us on the ladder".

Because, you know, that's how a ladder works.

April is always the best time to start these sort of threads. If the trend continues, you can say what a genius you were, If it doesn't happen, it's well buried & forgotten by the time you've actually played all the other teams
