Ok so you've given away a fifty.

So does that give the team winning the fifty the right to stop the offending player getting back on the mark?

Cos that just happened and WCE are assured victory.

And Ryan allowed to play on before the ump had even set the mark/50m. He'd ran about 60m at that play on point too. Umpire communication with players was absolutely atrocious tonight.

Scumps utterly ****ed up these calls tonight. Heads should roll.

Both the Phillips free kick then the ensuing 50m was a disgrace.

The 50m to Ryan was a bigger disgrace. The AFL is a disgrace. I'm not going to another game until this gets sorted out. Why waste 4 hours of your time for some idiot umpires to destroy a sporting contest.

The AFL will come out and say it was the correct call, despite footballers of the calibre of Ling and Dangerfield who have no dog in the fight saying it was a disgrace. Maybe it will take a player getting carted off when he is jumped on to draw a free kick before they wake up.

the umpiring was an absolute farce tonight. we simply are not allowed to win.
we get a run, they pull out a zinger.

was Degoey tripped? it sure looked it from my seat.

our players were crunched into the turf time and again, no fifties, and that Howe one, wtf! disgraceful. call it and pay the fine, it was a bloody joke

Really don’t like the new 50m penalty rules. It’s already a massive penalty (often given for debatable infringements), and there’s no sense that a team would ever be remotely disadvantaged by being forced to go back and take their kick from a specific point on the field after the penalty has been given (i.e. there’s no conceivable risk to the principle of advantage). So why the new play on rule, and why make the player manning the mark have to walk on eggshells at the risk of an 100m penalty (as we saw in the, I think, Sydney–Adelaide game last week)? I wouldn’t mind players being permitted to play on while they’re running to the mark, but they definitely shouldn’t be able to continue beyond it.

One of the new rules is the player can play in at any point during the 50m penalty and that’s why some sprint as if they pass you you then can’t impede their path you have to get someone else up the ground to cover the mark. Silly rule but still doesn’t explain why De Goey not given 50 when they were deliberately holding up play.

The umpires are paying 50m penalties with too much ease.

The decision against Phillips was a disgrace. The sliding rule is easily the worst rule ever implemented by the AFL due to the overreaction of one bad incident a few years back when Gary Rohan broke his leg.

i think what is worse, isnt that they pay them too easily, its that they pay them in an inconsistent manner. If Howe's was 50 because he established the mark incorrectly one metre too far forward, why isnt it 50 when in the next 5 minutes, 2 times the eagles player slowed up play by refusing to give the ball back to the player. in one case (i think others mentioned it here), GeGoey had to pull at the ball for about 10 seconds. Fast break over!!!!!

Both 50s were technically correct.
1st the umpire clearly pointed it was a WCE free and then ball went to a Collingwood player. They’ve been paying that forever.
2nd Howe stood up after the contest, clearly new the mark had been paid and then put his arm around Ryan. Different to the other non 50s where the contact lingered but was already there when the free was paid.
Both are harsh but in the rules.
The issue is the sliding rule is a farking joke and this new rule around playing on is to hard on the infinging team. Unless a player who intends to man the mark is quicker than the player receiving it they will either need to let them play on or pull someone from up the ground to man the mark which leaves their man free. Basically now 50m = almost certain score.
