If this is a 'bowl-off' for Starc and Hazlewood, to see who gets the nod if Oz decides to rest Siddle or Pattinson for Lord's, what happens if Neser outbowls them both ?

Schools of thought.

1. You don't change a Test winning XI.

2. Manage Patto. Bowled 35 overs in his comeback Test, last week.

3. Horses for courses. Play Starc - because it's Lord's. The infamous Lord's slope suits him.

4. Bring in Marsh. Unlikely.

Other possibilities ?

I've always thought 1. was a bad argument. It's always possible to win with passengers. The only way 1. would apply is if the players are so fragile that they mount a mutiny.

It's more justifiable for football, where the players interact with their teammates more on-field, so you need to consider how they combine with each other.

The commentators wanted 4., but that would weaken the already perilously weak batting even further -- unless Marsh is better than one of the nominal batsmen.

Without 4., managing the bowlers' workloads becomes a bigger issue. (e.g. 2, but it was supposed to be Siddle who swapped out.) Ideally some form of 2. & 3. would work together, so you're rotating in a way that matches the pitches they're most suited to. Jhye Richardson might be available late, too, but if they balls aren't swinging that might not be such a temptation.

1. Warner hopefully has had his pride pricked, and his ego at least pulls a major scoring contribution in one of the innings.

2. Only rest Patto if he pulls up sore in any way.

3. Do we axe a batsman and go in with 4 pacemen?

4. Either Marsh plays, I watch a movie instead of 2nd test for five days running.

Donny, is Trent Copeland over there playing county at least?

Okay, he's a GWS fan and attended the GWS-Pies game, so I guess that's a no:

Thanks K; looks like he is the Goldsack of Australian cricket then... Evil or Very Mad
