Goldie has finally hung up the boots. One of my all-time favourite Collingwood players – a no-nonsense player who always did his job and formed an essential part of our defence, pretty much right from his first game with the club all the way back in round 8 2007. Played a key role in our 2010 premiership side and was brilliant when he came back in the finals late last year, after injury and when most of us thought he was already finished. Will miss him!

Quote:
Collingwood fan favourite and 2010 premiership player Tyson Goldsack has officially announced his retirement.

The defender decided last year that the 2019 season would be his final at AFL level, telling teammates on Tuesday. He plans to move to Adelaide with his family.

“I gave it one more year but football’s grim reaper got me,” Goldsack said.

“But I’m content. How could I not be? I realised all of my football dreams, met some outstanding and interesting people and, in a sense, grew up with Collingwood’s arm around me.

“Chelsea and I made the call after the grand final last year to relocate to South Australia in 2020, so we’ve been preparing for the next chapter.

“I hope I did the jumper proud and thank the many, many people who helped me along the way.”

Beloved by Magpies and non-Magpies fans alike, Goldsack played 165 games in black and white and kicked the first goal in the 2010 Grand Final Replay.

He made a stunning return for the 2018 finals campaign and helped Collingwood make it all the way to the last game of the season, but couldn’t quite earn another flag.

“From his earliest days ‘Goldy’ was always one of the most intense players in the contest. His speed and courage either in the air or on the ground quickly earned the respect of his teammates,” Collingwood coach Nathan Buckley said.

“He was also a great clubman, someone people liked to spend time with. In the confines of a football club, who you are is as important as what you can do and ‘Goldy’ is a first class human.”

If any highlights are played to the team, it has to include our 2017 win over Freo when Goldie played out the game with a busted shoulder. That was pure guts. Top bloke who played with a big heart, all the best to him in the future. I hope he plays on in our VFL side or with the club in some capacity.

An absolute legend.

Who can ever forget the day he remained on the ground for a whole quarter with a busted shoulder, because we had no-one on the interchange. He kept throwing himself into contest after contest.

Thanks for the memories Goldy.

A Collingwood man ,a wonderful man ,an example the good things a man can be and we were the better for having him at our club—and our club the better for him being there

One of the best triers who ever pulled on the jumper. 148 home and away games and 17 finals (3 of them Grand Finals). He played in exactly 100 Collingwood wins. Nearly 2,000 career disposals, exactly 50 goals (his best goal-kicking season was 2012, when he kicked 24), 504 career tackles, 695 one-percenters and 551 marks. And how many times did he put his body on the line for the Club?

He - and his example - will be sorely missed.
