^

NSW has traditionally been a Labor state, which Vic was traditionally conservative.

Correlation or coincidence?

Leyonhjelm and the Christian Democratic Party candidate (not, contrary to my assumptions, Fred Nile, who wasn't up for election this time around) have both missed out. Final results:

Coalition 8
ALP 7
Greens 2
One Nation 2
Shooters & Fishers 1
Animal Justice 1

https://twitter.com/Tr1shM/status/1117614074248830976

Together with the Legislative Council members elected in 2015, that makes the total makeup of the NSW upper house (with 22 needed for a majority):

Coalition 17
ALP 14
Greens 3
One Nation 2
Shooters & Fishers 2
Animal Justice 2
Christian Democratic Party 1
Independent (former Green) 1

Means balance of power is shared by Mark Latham, Fred Nile and the Shooters & Fishers. Hope there's enough disagreement between those three to prevent a coherent agenda to push the NSW government further to the right.

And at Leyonhjelm’s expense, too.

Actually for the left it's terrible. Instead of having a libertarian to negotiate with the Government have to please the Religious Right.

Do the Shooters and Fishers and the Animal Justice parties cancel each other out?

Well, there are plusses and minuses – it's possible that One Nation and the Shooters will do a little more to frustrate the Libs' small-government/privatisation agenda than the Liberal Democrats would have. But yes, I would have still preferred Leyonhjelm to any of the right-wing minor parties that actually got in.

Quite possibly - opposing ideology that's for sure but each represent people who hold the same views and in the end as long as the people (all the people) are represented well that's how democracy should work yeah?

But I am absolutely deliriously delighted that Leyonhjelm is gone Very Happy

Leyonhjelm lost out to Animal Justice on the voting, as I understand it.

Ah, my impression was that it was to the second One Nation candidate (who was the last person elected) – could be wrong, though.

A shame Leyonhjelm wasn't elected after all, but at least Latham got in.
