My impressions as an attendee

- Missed Grundy badly. Dees didn't experiment much and Gawn played almost the entire game in the ruck and helped them control the contest. Lynch tried hard, but was relatively ineffective after the first 5-10 mins.
- Dees were generally harder at the contest though across the game and won contested ball. Thought they were bigger bodied across the field than we were
- Better players Moore, Adams, Beams, Elliott, Aish, Greenwood
- Goals Elliott 2, Beams 2, Reid 2, Cox 1
- Thought it was notable that Quaynor missed the first half with Murphy preferred, albeit Quaynor did some nice things when he got on.
- I thought Reid performed better than Mihocek as a tall forward target. Still loses his feet way too easily, but did provide a target more than Miho did.
- Glad there were no serious injuries and the form of Moore, Elliott and Beams were all promising as virtual new recruits from our efforts last season

To those of you pointing to players out - both teams had plenty missing, making the result less relevant/indicative

Grundy's absence was the most notable of those given Gawn controlled the ruck contest & Melbourne the clearances.

Dees had the following missing
Oliver, Viney, Jones, McDonald, May, Melksham, Lever, Fritsch, KK, Hannan

Pies had
Grundy, Pendles, Steele, DeGoey, Howe, Dunn, Scharenberg, WHE, Stephenson, Varcoe, Crisp, Wells

I'm not making a comment either way about Quaynor - I haven't yet seen him live. Murphy, though, looked last season like a potential 200-gamer. I appreciate that stepping up into the seniors late left him looking a little out of his depth but when he was fit and firing in the VFL he looked to have the makings of a genuine star. If they're just doing everything they can to give him a chance to get game-time against reasonable quality opposition, that's a good thing.

Murphy still looks skinny to me, whereas Quaynor is quite muscle bound for a young kid.

I watched all the AFLX games. I was up bush, only had FTA TV and rather than watch Foxtel or Netflix on the tablet, I thought I'd give it a look.

Overall, not bad to watch but without a team to support I just watched for Stevo, Sidey and Pendles.

All three were in cruise mode but looked the goods. Sidey was just up and down the ground getting the ball at will, Pendles just put himeslf in good positions and Stevo was a bit of both except he operated mainly in the forward line.

Got a few goals mainly from good reading of the play and putting himself in good positions. IIRC on one case he burnt off a chaser to get the ball and dobbed it. (It's also possible that didn't happen as I was tired and knocking down beers and red Wink )

Overall impression was that the product has potential, Stevo shows no signs of second year blues and Sidey and Pendles are.........sidey and Pendles (or Rusty and Dippa)

I watched all the AFLX games, but like Stui I was just looking for our guys. Last year I thought the product looked good & could provide a good option when a full game isn't possible due to numbers or space.
This year they really cocked it up. Gillo should be shot & pi**ed on, the guy's an idiot & seems to believe he owns the game. The "Super hero" theme, as he calls it, is just stupid & with all his other brilliant add-ons, it becomes a game for kids. Half the guys were lost with all the dumbass rules & didn't know wtf they were doing, esp when the "Game Changers" came on. The good bit was how much fun the players had on & off the field.

But on to our guys:

Last year it was a great way to get a look at our new kids, we saw how good Stevo & Mihocek were gonna be, and this year "Rusty" & "Dippa" (the latter is apparently a go at SP's feeble attempt at growing a mo.) were the same as last year. Among the best on their sides & smooth as silk. I think Skip is gonna surprise a few this year. I've seen a few things that make me think he's gonna be back near his very best, albeit a tad slower, he still has more time than any other player, and seems to be really injury free for the first time in years. The plethora of Elite mids will make it easier for him to just go where he's needed, anyway, just watch him.
Steelo is... Steelo. I think he may be the most respected player in the game (if he isn't Pendles is).
Stevo on the other hand, looked different, he looked far more polished, far more 'honed' than last year. No doubt at all he'll take a step up from last season, no second year blues here.
Varcs was also a bit of a surprise, he was quick, skilful, reliable, and did a couple of lovely things for the Deadly (not Deadlies apparently).

They all looked much better than the guys who played Melb. but that was probably as much about the production & way better camera angles, although Billy looked fantastic!

Dunno what will happen to AFLX in 2020, but it's Mclachlan's baby so he'll undoubtedly thrust it upon us in some form.
