I got curious...

2016-17:

1. Manchester City -- Total wage bill: £264.1m
2. Manchester United -- £263.5m
3. Chelsea -- £219.7m
4. Liverpool -- £207.5m
5. Arsenal -- £199.4m
6. Tottenham -- £126.9m

Maybe there are more recent figures out there.

The Manchester teams' payroll is not surprising.
I'm not sure Chelsea is getting value for money.

In 16/17 we won the title, so I'd say that was good value for wages. This year is a totally different story. But Chelsea is trying to change its identity from a Defensive team to an Attacking team. Much like Nathan Buckley said he would change our Culture some years ago...

Its interesting, we normally don't talk about formations in football but they do exist.

Buckley predominatly uses a 6-6-6

Malthouse loved the 7-6-5 or 8-6-4 that Richmond used last season, much more defensive

Formations exist, but the formations the coaches use bear no resemblance to the published team sheets or their structure.

I thought structure was a another word for formation. My mate said Bulldogs won a flag with a 3-12-3

When there is a stoppage, (the structure or formation) is in place. Once the game flows anything could happen, hence why we hear coaches saying the team lost its structure at times.

Some teams probably have 2-3 formations that they alternate with during a match. The formation would obviously dictate the way the team plays.

As much as the result sucked, neutral's are saying the 2018 Grand Final was the best in the last 10 or so years. Because it was pretty close to a straight 666 vs 666. Both teams played the way it should be played.

In 2018, WC were the leading users of 6-7-5: 10.5% of centre bounces. (Collingwood 2.1%.)

The leading users of the extreme 8-6-4 formation: Adelaide (29.2% Shocked ), Richmond (11.5%), GWS (6.3%).

I’m a statistical nut but I’m always mindful of what the stats are actually saying.
The only reason a coach would change his centre square structure / formation is because they are behind on the scoreboard or injury.
Richmond’s preferred structure in 2018 was obviously very successful for them because they won the most qtrs in 2018. They would have only gone to their less preferred option when they were behind on the scoreboard which obviously wasn’t very often.
What would be even more relevant in analysing centre square structures would be the percentage of times they won first use of the ball when that structure was employed.
The Tigers might have only used 6 6 6 on 4% of occasions but it’s more important to know how often they won the clearance when they used that formation. I wouldn’t be calling them “ easybeats “ because of any upcoming rule changes ( not that anyone has said it in this thread )

No one called them "easybeats"... just "dead". Wink

R.I.P Richmond

They are still favourites with the bookies. I don't know if this is the Lynch Effect. If they get the same injuries as everyone else and those injuries include Mr. Lynch, they may well miss the eight. We should hope so, because if they had gone back to back last year, it would have been the Death of Football. They have a Fab Four, but almost everyone and everything else, including gamestyle (pretty much forced by their lack of skill), is #%$(*#%. (It's possible their lack of injuries for almost 2 years is due to something more fab than their Fab Four, rather than just luck.)

There are many problems for Richmond to solve. Last year their biggest asset was forward 50 pressure. Lynch will not add to this, he will weaken it. Its common knowledge that Lynch and Riewolt don't chase. They are both focal points. They may not even work together. Remember when Voss got Fevola, and Brown used similar leading patterns? Its like the 50 wasn't big enough for both of them.

And they don't play a style like West Coast that favours tall forwards, instead Richmond mostly hack kick forward and apply pressure. Rioli may need to write the word chase on his right arm aswell as his left, just to pick up the slack.

Essendon may pose more of a threat than Richmond, especially if they get Daniher working.
