What do people think caused this discrepancy in 2018? What is different? |

Ive already answered that. Maybe even in the same post.
RudeBoy,
13th in Centre Clearences
1st in around the ground Clearences
Thats a bit of a discrepancy, thats why i think we should line up in the middle a bit differently. ( More ball winners, JDG, Adams, Beams, Sier etc )
The only way i can justify this particular statistic is that most of the season we had Pendlebury, Sidey and Adams in the centre square. Pendles and Sidey IMO are better used as outside players...
As Pies2016 pointed out, Centre Clearences will be more important than ever! _________________ On the eve of a Dynasty

Your answer was "wrong players in the centre square (but not around the ground)", was it? |

Are you serious?
You don’t even know who I am, apart from being a cartoon of a magpie.
How could anyone have their feelings hurt by anything said on here?
This board is just a meaningless fun diversion- nothing to be upset about here.
But, to answer your Phillips query I just believe that he has earned his position and he will keep it until we have a better option. We don’t have a better option yet. Arguing about whether he should or shouldn’t be there is actually quite inane. The season will commence and he will be selected or he won’t be. I doubt the selection panel will adjourn to see what the posters on Nicks believe should occur. Well, maybe they will listen to what I said, but not to you. |
I see a lot of words, but it does not seem you were able to answer my question regarding your selection. Yet Again!
How am I to know your feeling's were not hurt? The right thing for me to do is ask you, just incase. Everytime i type the name 'Phillips' you are so quick to defend him and create a storm. So (obviously) you get touchy on this topic, (which I alluded to above). To suggest that Steele Sidebottom is not better than Phillips is lunacy...
I do get it though, he can run and his left is pretty good. does that mean we should try recruit Cathy Freeman??
Answer me one thing if you can!! What does Tom Phillips offer Collingwood, that Steele Sidebottom cant?
This is how a discussion works: You mentioned above that we dont have a better option. I disagreed, gave you many options ( e.g ) Sidey, Stephenson, Crisp. Then await a response. What do you do? Ignore my answer and study my comment looking for a loophole to attack my opinion. Similar to a couple other posters 'style'. I like you '5 from the wing on debut', which is why i give you my time. Unlike 'pies4shaw'...
If you notice, im more than capable of debating footy tactics with many other posters, in good fun. Why do we seem to get tangeled so much for ??
And if your getting touchy over the fact that i havent displayed a Phillips highlight reel with the other midfielders, I assure you, im working on one You just need to wait a couple more seasons... |
OK TM,
This is my last post on this topic. I have had enough of it.
First, l have never suggested that Phillips is better than Sidebottom. You asked me to pick a team. I selected two wings. I selected both of them as wings. They both get a game in my team. Crisp is too good to move from defence. From what I have seen of Stephenson he is going to be very good but as a midfielder he still trails Phillips.
Second, I woudn’t recruit Cathy Freeman. I have seen her train and she can only run around in circles.
Third, I haven’t looked at any of your footy highlights reels yet so wouldn’t know that there wasn’t one of Phillips unless you told me - which you just did. If you did want video of him though you wouldn’t struggle to find it, seeing as there were only a few players in the competition last year that had the ball more than he did.
Fourth, the end. |

This is why I like you, 5
Ok, lets just both drop the topic, until maybe a few rounds in. Then we can revaluate the situation then. if Phillips goes to the next level this year. I'll be the first to admit i was wrong. All in all, Ive enjoyed picking your brain so far.
Im really looking forward to some Footy... _________________ On the eve of a Dynasty |

Oh please, me negative. I like your enthusiasm, but you've turned an originally interesting topic, into an episode of farcical nonsense. Start a new 'highlights' thread if you like, this one has run its race IMO.[/b] _________________ Don't count the days, make the days count. |

5 from the wing on debut,
"Third, I haven’t looked at any of your footy highlights reels yet so wouldn’t know that there wasn’t one of Phillips unless you told me - which you just did. "
You should check at least one of them out, specifically:

Notice how good a fully fit Adam Treloar on the wing looks ( 1min:46seconds) , keep in mind there is only 1 minute on the clock remaining!! I havent forgotten that play till this day. Or at 1:37, notice the Bulldogs player in chase of Treloar entering from the left of screen, he is already in full speed pursuit. Treloar then accelerates from 2nd gear, to 3rd, then 4th. By then the supercharger is whistling away and Treloar is able to kick deep into 50.
Secondly, Pendles was not fit at the end of the year, Treloar was 60% and DeGoey was required forward more than middle. I believe we have so much upside to our midfield, we dont even know what limits we're capable of...
To K,
we were discussing players that have good acceleration previously. Treloar is the Man... _________________ On the eve of a Dynasty

I'm not trying to be a party pooper, but as I've already stated, we ranked 13th last year for centre clearances. Added to that, apart from the first 25 mins, we got toweled up there in the Grand final, which ultimately cost us a Premiership.
Certainly, we should have a better midfield brigade in 2019, with the expected improvement from Sier, as well as (hopefully) a fit Pendles, Treloar and the addition of Beams.
But let's not assume we will dominate centre clearances, given how poorly we performed in this important area last year. We need to improve massively in this area if we are to win the flag. I think we can do just that, but it will require significant improvement from our whole midfield brigade. |

How did our midfield go that day? Keep in mind, these highlights are 1st half only I havent checked the stats for that day, but JDG had an impact on that game like i havent seen since the Nathan Buckley days. I think it was the only day he played mostly centre. Melbourne's midfield was a contested and clearence beast heading into this game. However, they did'nt know who hit them, or where he was coming from...
Here are the stats from Queens Birthday :
Clearences: Coll 45 - Melb 26
Centre : Coll 18 - Melb 10
Stoppages: Coll 27 - Melb 16
Too add to this, on a day that JDG did not score 1 goal, Collingwood still managed to kick 20.13.133.
Before half time, DeGoey already had 10 score involvements. Much more important than any of his bags of goals IMO. Besides as he showed in the GF, Jordan is capable of scoring heavily from the middle. And did i mention that Jamie's looking good? _________________ On the eve of a Dynasty |

.......Anyway, I read the stats today on all teams and how often they used the 6 / 6 / 6 starting line ups at centre bounces in 2018.
Collingwood was second overall at around 65 %, while another successful team team in Richmond were last at around 3 % of the time.
Not sure what to make of all that but it does suggest that we should be a fair way down the track in terms of being prepared for 6 / 6 / 6 starting positions compared to other teams.
I guess it also suggests that teams like Richmond and Dees were another one, will have much more work to do in order to become more comfortable with this new compulsory set up.
Hopefully I haven’t gone off topic to much 🙄 |

I'm not in front of my computer at the moment, but I just had to log in to say that this is the best stat I've heard regarding the upcoming season. Genius find to be honest.
I just read the article and highly recommend it for anybody interested in stats.
Richmond liked to play a 8-6-4 formation last year. ( Two defenders on back of square ). They were never scored against when lining up in this formation. It also allowed Dusty to 'cheat' forward.
