The vote was 5 to 3, with the Republican-nominated conservatives in the majority and the Democratic-nominated liberals in dissent. The court’s order showed the deep division within the court about the series of pandemic-related election cases that have come to dominate its agenda.

The court’s conservatives say they must defer to state officials on election decisions made in the largely Republican-run states, and the liberal justices say there is a need for dramatic action by judges to ensure the franchise for endangered voters during an unprecedented time...."

While it's easy to be appalled by the Republicans' hypocrisy in rushing through Barrett's confirmation – and that they are nominating another right-wing Catholic extremist to begin with – I do still think that the real act of bastardry was blocking the Merrick Garland vote in 2016 on a bogus principle that they weren't even, as it happens, willing to institute as a new precedent.

One would think that the US public (the vast majority of whom do not share Barrett's social and economic views) would be unwilling to forgive and forget, and that this might even end up being a major factor in Trump being voted out of office. But McConnell and his cronies may well feel that they get the last laugh regardless – having managed to, in the space of just four years, reshape the Supreme Court, and potentially US society, for a generation. If Biden achieves nothing else in office, he should pull the rug out from under the Republicans by chucking out the current Supreme Court altogether and starting again from scratch. It's ridiculous that the country should be held to ransom by a minority of extremists.

As I said above, Garland was entitled to a hearing and vote. McConnell was wrong to deny him that.

On your last point, those administrations won the electoral college which is what matters. Your obsession with the national popular vote doesn't change that.

The problem with appointing 48 year old judges to their Supreme Court, of course, is that when they get cancer, it takes them out really quickly.
