Post subject: Possible positional changes in 2019 | |
|
You get the feeling that if we have a good run with injury and go into the early rounds with nearly a full list to choose from, we may see some re-deployment of key players into new positions. I guess the domino affect of one player moving has resultant changes on other players potential spots. Here are a few examples:
* Scott Pendlebury: with a September period inhibited by illness, I can't help but feel that it may be time to preserve and extend his career with a move to the half back flank. Similar to what Clarko did with Hodge and Mitchell in their latter premiership years. With Dayne Beams return and most likely a full time mid field berth, it may be best for Pendles to make the switch.
* Jordan DeGoey: if Jamie Elliott comes back (yes it's an if), it may pave the way to move Jordan to the midfield. Last season's Queens Birthday match was an exciting sample size of seeing what Jordan can when given an extensive run at it on then ball. 30+ possessions and 10 clearances saw him set up our win in the most dynamic fashion. Reckon a 70:30 split between mid and forward should be a great balance.
* Tim Broomhead: I have posted previously that I can visualise him providing excellent drive out of a back pocket role. With limited spots in the mid-field and forward available, 2019 is Tim's final chance to prove himself and avoid delisting. Like Chris Mayne whom lost 4-6 kg and re-invented himself on the wing in 2018, Tim needs to find a niche position that we are lacking success in and aim to cement himself there. He has good hands, feet and skills but as many have posted, lacks the physical presence and shoulder strength to absorb 100 minutes on the ball.
* Darcy Moore: not going out on a limb here, but hopefully the smaple size down back has solidified the belief of him and the selectors that centre half back is his niche. Hard to see him having the tricks to get 60+ goals per year and hopefully playing behind the ball is less stressful on his "Ricky Barham esque" hamstrings.

I still see Pendles mainly as a mid. He doesn't rely on speed anyway, so he should continue there, where his creativity and elite decision-making are second to none, with perhaps a little time 'resting' in defence.
As for De Goey, he is simply too good a forward to be 'wasted' in the midfield, where we have a host of other options there including Pendles, Sidey, Sier, Adams, Treloar and even Daics. Obviously, if we find ourselves struggling in the midfield, he could be used there in short bursts, but I see him as a 60-80 goal a year forward. He and Cox could well become the best forward combination of all time.
Moore is a Monty for CHB. The fullback spot will be interesting, depending on how Dunn recovers. Maybe Roughead is a chance there? I also expect Quaynor to be pushing for a running half back role.
The great thing is we seem to have great depth now, which, given our propensity for injuries, we will most certainly need. |

Geez, you're a mind reader Rude!
Agree totally, especially regarding the Cox/JDG forward combination. Cox should be in the 50+ goals this season and his footy smarts, with his little tap ons and body positioning will have our other forwards chiming in with plenty too. _________________ Don't count the days, make the days count. |

Mason needs to work on the penetration of his kicking which seemed to "contract" in 2018 with his 35 metres and under accuracy being faultless but his longer kicking really being a non-event. Strangely this wasn't the case in 2017 and prior. To kick 40+ this needs to change. _________________ I love the Pies, hate Carlscum |

He had 14 frees paid against him in 25 games, about once every 2nd game, a free against

<snip - how about we just play the ball? thx...the mods>
Getting caught doesn’t mean giving away a free kick!!!
Getting caught means being forced to dispose of the Ball under pressure...
As opposed to smoothly working through traffic without a hand put on him

It was very obvious that he was being caught on occasions last year, in a manner that he had never been caught before. It made me think that he was nearing the end, but as the season progressed he was back to his old self. I assumed then that the earlier problems that he was having were related to an injury that he then overcame or at least was able to better manage. |

The comment was request not simplistically jumping to conclusions and instead analyse a comment in context without being derogatory |
