Stars seething at Bancroft over controversial dismissal

https://www.theage.com.au/sport/cricket/stars-seething-at-bancroft-over-controversial-dismissal-20190204-p50vmh.html

'However Hobson gestured that the ball hadn’t carried to him, and it looked for a moment as though Dunk ... would be able to continue his innings.

But wicketkeeper Bancroft raced in to appeal, and Scorchers captain Mitchell Marsh allowed the appeal to proceed.

The decision was sent to the third umpire. More than two minutes after the ball, Dunk was given out, even though the vision shown on the broadcast was blurry and seemingly inconclusive.
...

“It looked to me that the bowler and the fielder said it didn’t carry, and everyone went back to their positions. And Bancroft asked for it to be had a look at. And somehow the umpire has come up with ‘that’s out’. It’s an extraordinary decision in the end, but that’s history,” Maxwell said after the game.'

Surely Bancroft realizes every action of his will be scrutinized? What is he thinking? Does he think?

What's the problem, K ? Bancroft did nothing underhand. He thought it was a catch and appealed, which Marsh okayed.

Well, it's like he over-ruled his teammate (did he really have more idea than the alleged catcher?) who did not want to claim it... I'm not the one spewing, though; it's Maxwell et al. who are. I just think he's being a bit foolish, not for the first time. The interviews he and Smith gave were very foolish. M. Marsh seems lacking in wisdom, too. How such a person can be VC... Desperate times.

Ex-VC in the Test team.

Yes. I didn't mean it's desperate times for anyone to be a mere BBL captain. They can make Bozo the Clown captain and I'm fine with it. I was referring to the Test team.

At the time the commentator said Hobson indicated he didn't know, and not that he didn't catch it.

Again, what's the prob with him over-ruling a team mate ? If, in fact, Hobson did call it as "I don't know", Bancroft and Marsh had every right to appeal.

Here's the video:

https://www.cricket.com.au/video#videoId=5997937240001

Hobson to my mind clearly indicated not out (palms down) straight away, rather than "I don't know" (shrug, palms up).

You could argue that he was plain wrong, of course. Maybe he was. It's not clear from the footage that Bancroft, as claimed, was the main disputer. Where was Marsh fielding? Who was that at mid-on?

The Stars are not exactly holding back (I'm just noting this, not necessarily agreeing with them!):

'The Stars were later understood to be seething with Bancroft, with list manager Trent Woodhill tweeting that “sometimes one road to a Damascus themed yoga retreat just isn’t enough,” a thinly-veiled reference to Bancroft’s dedication to yoga through his nine-month ban for ball tampering.

Asked about the dismissal, Dunk did not single out Bancroft but nor did he absolve the former Test opener.

“It was pretty disappointing on a couple of fronts really, considering the young player who caught it, and the bowler himself were pretty confident that it wasn’t out, I was pretty confident that it wasn’t out, and yet somehow the soft signal was out,” Dunk told The Age.

“We’ve heard a lot about how the way we want to change the way we play in Australian cricket, and to be on the end of it was disappointing. But also as an Australian cricket supporter, I do want to see some of those changes implemented not just at the top but all the way through.

I thought there was a real opportunity missed from a few of their players to put some actions in place that would have reflected the spirit of the game a little bit better. But we move on pretty quickly.” '
