Yep. All such Americanisms deserve to be loaded into a cannon and fired into the sun.
(And without being too much of a wet blanket, haven't we had a million of these threads? And is anyone really going to bring up anyone who took the field before, say, 1958, or are we just going to hear the same old names? Greening, Daicos, Buckley, Swan, etc.) |
There is only one GOAT and that is Michael Jordan. Maybe two if you include Tom Brady. Three if you stretch to include Tiger Woods. If Australians decide to adopt that word in their culture, that's on Australia and not the US!!!!!! The word is used in the US to facilitate healthy debate about challenges to those assertions. In the US, the general conclusion is that its hard to conclude definitively due to cross generations and diversity of accomplishment (and so it comes down to a personal view). There are some who are entitled to be labelled as such (i.e., the three above, plus any heir to that title - LeBron, Montana, Nicklaus, etc.) I love it! Using the word GOAT as if it is a fact is actually a challenge to someone that you want to have a debate. You dont ask, "who is the GOAT". You assert that so and so IS THE GOAT and then see who you can reel in for a discussion. i argue endlessly with my 11yo son over his label of GOAT for Tom Brady!
If we have a GOAT, i'd argue its Nathan Buckley. But i wouldnt hang anyone for coming out with Daicos, Pendles, Greening, Coventry or any of a pretty big group of players that i also haven't seen. _________________ Ohhh, the Premiership's a cakewalk .......

If GOAT was the one and only “Americanism” distaste may be warranted
But in today’s Australia we embrace their culture
Things like St.Valentine,s Day and Halloween are example,s our current day
generation see as ours _________________ I'm not arguing--just explaining why i am right |

Okay, Baz (taking on David's challenge), who was the best player you saw play before 1958? |

Using value to the side during a game and his impact on a result was IMHO
was Bob Rose
An example in a game we were playing (can’t recall opponent) at half time we were 7 goals up and dominating
Bob did not return after long interval and we were rudderless scraping in by less than a goal (by no means was this a one off so influential was his game)
Bob was great both sides of his body ,harder than steel
For courage, skill and a player to inspire teammates Bob was my best _________________ I'm not arguing--just explaining why i am right |

The 1958 period we had some great footballers and I recalled Jack Dyer discussion on one of them
A young Thorrold Merrett arrived at Collingwood as a 16 year old (DOB 1933) after first being told by Richmond “Too small ,too light” Dyer was one who rejected him
He honed his stab pass in his Cobden back yard “stabbing “ the ball thru a car tire suspended from a rope (pinched idea from Bradman and golf ball)
The career was brilliant
Later on World of Sport egged on by Lou Dyer admits his mistake
Lou he said “He could kick a ball up a chooks “a#***s from 50 yards” said Jack
Years after the 50,s I saw a player who came close to “Thrupence “ aka turn on a three penny bit was our name for Merrett
Barry Price came close _________________ I'm not arguing--just explaining why i am right |

They wrap up Burke —Barrot—Clay ((Richmond sixties centre line)
But the fifties at Vic Park of Merrett—Bill Twomey Jnr.—-Healy center line was superb _________________ I'm not arguing--just explaining why i am right |

Is this a trick question? Did he wear more than one number in his career? |

When I first saw Pricey he wore 5 and when elevated to DVC he wore 3 as was the nabit in those days. With Price and Greening belting the ball down full backs had no hope on McKenna. Colin Tully was around then and he use to send these low skimming drop kicks as well. _________________ Annoying opposition supporters since 1967. |
