Didnt feature in the opening 2 rounds. Thats a shame, it would have been something to see him play straight away, right after being signed on.

Jonathon Marsh reveals dark moments that led to shock 2016 retirement
by Ben Waterworth, FOX SPORTS May 29, 2019, 9:50pm

Former Magpie turned Saint Jonathon Marsh has opened up about the mental health issues that forced him into an early AFL exit.

Former Magpie turned Saint Jonathon Marsh has courageously opened up about the mental health issues that forced him into an early AFL retirement, revealing he was “hysterically crying” after his final game in 2016.

The 23-year-old was picked up by St Kilda earlier this year during the AFL’s new pre-season supplemental period. He’s already played three games for the Saints, including last Sunday’s win over Carlton.

Marsh’s comeback has come nearly three years after he shocked Collingwood supporters in November 2016 when the club announced the defender had retired and wanted to return home to Western Australia.

That was despite Marsh, who was also contracted until the end of 2017, featuring in the Magpies’ senior side for 10 of the final 11 games of the 2016 season.

But as Marsh explained on Wednesday night, not all was well with the 2013 draftee at the time.

In an expansive and revealing interview on Fox Footy’s On The Mark, Marsh described how difficult the back-half to the 2016 season was for him, leading to the decision to quit the AFL after consulting an external psychologist.

“Each week I felt like I was running around at 110kg. I felt heavy, it was really hard to train — it was just difficult for me … I wasn’t really enjoying it after games, win or loss, I’d just be ‘cool, let’s just do it again next week’,” Marsh told On The Mark.

“The last round of the year we lost to Hawthorn by a point and I didn’t really care that we lost by a point. Like, it’s football. But I just sat in the rooms and I bawled my eyes out, hysterically crying.

“I think it was just because the year had just ended and it was a release that I’d got through — I didn’t think I’d get through … I was pretty proud of myself.

Saw parts of the interview last night. Spoke highly of Bucks. Was a very good show until my dog chewed up my Mrs' 90 year old blanket her grandmother owned and she went off her head.

Laughing

Yeah. I was worried he'd swallowed some, but I made sure he dropped one hassle free this morning.

He wasn't allowed to sleep in our room however. Crying or Very sad

Marsh is into the line-up for his first final tomorrow night against Richmond. Has only played one game since round 6, so a bit of a surprise call-up. Hope he does well!
