Obviously Heath Shaw brought Collingwood's bad culture to GWS and corrupted his Giants team mates. Geez, journalism is so easy, I should apply for Caro's job!

heath could not control his adhd on the field, i dont recall any mention of drugs, not even when he got in that car. dont put this on his name

I was being facetious/tongue in cheek. It's how caro/robbo would have spun it. ie, make shit up. Wink

Anyway, remind me again why we worship AFL players and expect them to be role models for society?

Majority of Players do it but they don't get caught on Gameday like Murray Did

I think you could say that a number of players would be taking recreational drugs and this would be greater or lesser than the average for the population and age group. I cannot see a majority taking drugs.

I'm curious to know what people think of the different treatment. Murray will miss 2 years, Mumford will be playing for the Giants again next month. Same as Jake Carlisle. Yes, I know Murray tested positive on game day, and Mumford just filmed himself in the off season. BUT Mumford is an AFL employee and will be playing again soon -- why the f*** should he be allowed? I'm always staggered by the different responses to our boys and other clubs. If this thread's not allowed, please delete.

The distinction is, of course, crucial. Playing under the influence of performance-enhancing substances* is cheating, whereas taking cocaine when you're injured or during the off-season is (or at least should be) your own business.

*As I've written previously, it looks like Murray wasn't actually under the influence and will be done on something like a technicality. But it's still a fundamentally different case. I would be very disappointed if Mumford faced any sanctions for this.

Why would you be disappointed if Mumford copped a sanction? The video was taken during the playing season. It's all over the news and Facebook. A mate's Year 8,9 and 10 students have been watching the video and copying the 'sausage" quote like parrots. How do you think those kids are going to react when offered rec drugs? Any other workplace and Mumford would be shown the door -- why are AFL players continually on an untouchable pedestal with this shit? As an AFL employee, I hope the AFL does put a boot up his ass, and I hope it does affect his comeback chances. If it was a Collingwood player, same deal. Yes it's a problem in all aspects of society. Difference is anyone else would cop a whack. I'm sick to ****ing death of these overpaid show ponies getting away with what us mere plebs would be facing worse for.

I find it hypocritical the same people who say Mumford shouldn't face sanctions are the same people saying Murray should be delisted by the club. It stinks.

Nah. I know few of non-football playing mates that have been caught with no real consequence. One had to go to counselling. Another lost her license with no other charge. Diversion is the thing these days.

I had a lovely post written for this bit but seeing as it deals with police corruption, substance abuse in the legal profession and the like, discretion is the better part of valour.

oh i think he should but there isnt enough evidence police wise,
I also think the afl will bend over backward to let him off because its one of their pet teams,

Won't somebody please think of the children? Rolling Eyes I dunno, if it's going to have such a catastrophic effect on high school students (who have obviously never played Grand Theft Auto or watched Scarface, the doe-eyed little dears), maybe, I dunno, the video shouldn't have been published to begin with? The public interest defence here frankly seems pretty limited, as used as we may be to seeing public figures' private lives strung out in the tabloids.

Also, maybe instead of getting angry at double standards, you should be questioning why some workplaces still think it's okay to give workers the boot for doing something in their free time that doesn't affect their on-the-job performance. Thankfully, as Joel points out above, things nowadays are not nearly as black-and-white as you would like them to be.

I assume you really meant Citizen Kane.

Murray got caught by asada/wada. Mumford caught on video... There's the difference. Meaning only AFL and the club need to give punishment

Actually, the big difference is that Murray tested positive for cocaine on match day. That's why he's facing a 4 yr ban. If he'd tested positive during the week or in the off-season, he would not have faced a penalty at all, but would have received a confidential warning, under the 3 strikes rule.

Can anybody tell me why it takes SO long to get a B sample tested? Poor Murray is still clinging to a faint hope as there has been a precedent in the Rugby world.
