Not too much longer before the pulse stops and Qantas goes the way of Ansett Airlines.

They'll wind up Qantas as a company and transfer the assets and money to Jetstar where their costs are a lot less.

Effectively, Qantas will be rebadged and the employees will get shafted.

Going to be an interesting standoff. Are the unions pig headed enough to let this happen?

Don't think the employees/unions have much say anymore.
The decision has been made and the boss has been paid an extra 70% to get it done.
The world's oldest commercial airline is being shafted by a Pom.

^I'm not so sure "shafted" is the word, though. It's a private company; how else are they supposed to compete in the global market?

Actually I think he's Irish. It amazes me how a CEO could ground an airline without notice when it is illegal for a Union to take such action. He's done it deliberately to coincide with the Spring Carnival. I hope he gets the sack.

So Joyce is going to face the Australian public to put his position.
What program do you think he will appear on?
ABC's insiders?
9's 60 minutes?
ABC's 7;30?
Ten's 7pm project?
No, he's going to be on Bolt!!!!

Doesn't look like he wants to have a real interview. Why go on a program with a known union/Government basher? Unless you need to avoid the hard questions.

???
isnt that what the unions have been doing.
The level of notice allows for nothing.
They were not happy with the agm, said they would ramp up the strike action they had already been taking.

Qantas are being asked by the unions to slowly go broke with their demand's. Industry experts - not Qantas aligned - have stated that if the dispute were to go to arbitration the unions would loose.
Under the current act, there is no action Qantas can take other than ongoing "talks" that have snap strikes as bargining chips.

Not sure if it's a good thing or not. Hope it'll create space for another budget airline to keep dragging the prices down.

^think thats the point David.
Budget airline means low costs.
under the current demands, Qantas cant and wont compete.

No it's not illegal.

Unions are allowed to take industrial action under law, employers are allowed to employ lockouts. Both are legal tactics.

Irrespective of that, this is going to end in tears.

I think what gets up a lot of people's noses is the executive salary of the CEO has gone up a whopping 70% while demanding his workforce work for less at a time when Qantas has had a 70% downturn on its financial performance.

^ Yes. Have already referenced that in the Occupy thread.

Not to mention that while he's been at the helm, the airline has had a string of near-disasters after it outsourced maintenance operations overseas - not that you'll find too many reminders of that in the Murdoch press.

Joyce has done a pretty good job of trashing the brand long before this trouble came to a head.
