I thought this thread was supposed to be about the phenomenon of people getting excessively offended about things, not embodying it. Nothing quite gets the tabloid crowd's knickers in a twist like sex education classes. _________________ All watched over by machines of loving grace |

Yeah, they're hardly what I'd call derogatory, they look like a reasonable depiction of indigenous people in traditional garb, like you'd see now in a dance.
I guess Neville the concrete Aboriginal wouldn't work these days either. _________________ Every dead body on Mt Everest was once a highly motivated person, so maybe just calm the **** down. |

Saying that boys can have periods is just confusing rubbish though. The OMG I'm offended people are the ones who are putting these ridiculous, pandering statements into sex ed in the first place.
No, boys and men cannot have periods, or get pregnant no matter how much some people want to believe it. |

Men can get pregnant via anal sex.

And just like tv shows if ...... (freechoice race or religion) . is not represented it’s a racist show.
I had a gorgeous black baby doll when I was a kid, is that racist? _________________ You cant fix stupid, turns out you cant quarantine it either! |

I know a lot of people are hostile towards transgender people or find the condition hard to understand, but if you accept the basic principle of it then there’s nothing particularly radical about what this school is doing: there are some transgender kids who identify as boys, live their lives as boys, are socially accepted as boys and even legally recognised as boys, but are still physiologically female and thus have periods. It’s easy to scoff at that idea from afar, but all I can say is that if it was your child maybe you’d feel differently.
The idea that sex education classes shouldn’t mention that possibility comes from the same place as the idea that children shouldn’t learn about homosexuality in school because it might confuse them or lead them astray (remember all those controversies a decade ago about picture books about kids with two mums or two dads?). But of course, whatever you think about homosexuality or gender dysphoria, we live in a world in which people are gay and transgender, and children tend to be a lot more intelligent and capable of dealing with complex ideas than the Moral Majority-type handwringers give them credit for.
Now, I do think there are more and less optimal ways to teach this stuff: if the very first thing you do is get up and say: “menstruation happens to girls and boys”, or if every mention of girls must be accompanied by “or boys”, Monty Python style, then that probably would constitute a case of the actual point of the lesson getting bogged down in political correctness. I also think it’s very unlikely that this is how this school is actually teaching the subject, because god knows things are almost always more nuanced than the hysterical tabloid world of boogiemen and political-correctness-gone-mad would have you believe. _________________ All watched over by machines of loving grace |

Maybe they could change the text to transgender boys may have periods to make it easier, and more accurate, to understand. If it needs to be discussed at all, really don’t see why it does. Kinda like you get a broad education at school but leave the specialised stuff for the degree. _________________ You cant fix stupid, turns out you cant quarantine it either! |

Disagree. Many schools have one or more transgender students, and children need to learn to interact with each other now, not when they're in university. As I said, there are better and worse ways of handling that, but as neither of us have actually attended the classes or know the precise wording of the lessons (what's quoted in the article is a council directive to the school, not what teachers are actually going to be saying in class), I'm going to lean towards the presumption that they've thought carefully about this and know what they're doing. _________________ All watched over by machines of loving grace |
