I wanted to post this article in David's thread about pubic hair but couldn't find it. Here will have to do:

http://www.ladbible.com/news/uk-parents-outraged-as-school-textbook-shows-woman-with-porn-star-pubic-20190213

People have too much time on their hands. At least it wasn't the full brazillian which has gone out of vogue.

Fkn Mumsnet. Who else? Laughing

While I strongly support the cultivation and preservation of pubes, let me put on my third-wave feminist hat and say that any representation of the ‘correct’ amount of pubic hair is about imposing a restrictive standard on women’s bodies. Some women trim or wax some of their pubic hair, some get rid of all of it and some just let it grow. Saying that only the last of these ought to be represented in cartoons in a textbook is, in its own way, small-minded and puritanical.

It's been a busy week so far for people feeling outraged and offended.

First there was the St Kevins boys and their "offensive" chant that had people tripping over themselves to shriek their outrage to anyone who didn't want to listen.

Today I see a piece about a Pole Dancing Studio in Blackburn getting threats of violence after advertising Pole Dancing classes for children aged 10 to 16.

I read it in the Herald Sun but here's a link to an ABC Radio piece on it.

https://www.abc.net.au/radio/melbourne/programs/breakfast/blackburn-pole-dance-studio-under-scrutiny-for-kids-classes/11638736

So the villagers, suitably armed with burning torches and pitchforks, prepared to storm the studio claiming that it was sexualising children, imagining creepy old men furtively watching 10 year olds in skimpy clothes swinging on a pole and demanding that the building be burned down (or at least the classes be stopped)

Interestingly, many of the comments were of a similar stance which was "If you don't like it, don't send your kid but FFS stop shrieking"

Hmmm

Well I don’t tend to shriek unless 8m at the footy, the St Kevin boys, I bet their parents are pretty pissed, and the school should be, they were in school uniform. They don’t deserve to be expelled, but certainly, they deserve some punishment, and pole dancing! Talk about look for trouble! It’s a kardashian move! Call it gymnastics on vertical bars! Storm in a padded out tripleD cup.

Not sure why you've put offensive in inverted commas, as if it isn't offensive? It is, I saw the whole song. No place for that type of stuff in this day and age.

The pole dancing story reminds me of seeing an article the other day about K-Mart having to pull a Halloween costume off the shelves because of an online petition about it. The costume? A childs wedding dress. The issue the permanently offended had? It promoted child brides. FFS. Witches and zombies and vampires are all ok but a kid pretending to get married? Outrageous Rolling Eyes I reckon I had about 50 pretend weddings when I was a kid.

I put offensive in inverted commas because how offensive it is, is subjective.

In this day and age it was pretty stupid to do it in school uniform on public transport but I don't think it deserved the angst it got.

For reference, the Aruba chant has been around for decades at least so these numbats didn't invent it, and it's made the news before.

When looking it up the other day I found this article about another time it got media attention, and a self described feminist wrote an article describing how her and her girlfriends sang a version about Men at Uni

As if that somehow makes it ok? So, you'd be fine with it being sung about your daughter?

My daughter isn't some thin skinned petal, she's more than capable of looking after herself.

She's been putting down dickheads, both verbally and physically, for years. I have no need to get offended on her behalf.

I guess there are a couple of different things here:

1) Children’s pole-dancing classes: I can’t really add much more to the excellent audio discussion in the ABC link (Rosewarne is always good value on these things, even if she swings a little more libertarian than I would). Personally, I do feel there’s something not quite right about offering classes like these to kids; yes, I understand that pole-dancing is a supposedly non-sexual activity now and that it’s been taken from its original strip club context and "safely" commercialised. But even if most of the women who do it nowadays have no intention of becoming strippers and just see it as a fun fitness activity, you can’t tell me that the appeal of it has nothing to do with the strip club association (i.e. it’s a safe way to indulge in "transgressive" role playing). Now, I don’t subscribe to the view that children and teenagers are wide-eyed innocents at risk of corruption at every turn, but I can’t shake the feeling that this kind of thing plays into the broader problem of young adolescents deriving self-worth from performing and presenting an extreme sexualised aesthetic.

It reminds me a bit of the point Waleed Aly has made about the uncomfortable alliance between capitalism and social conservatism. Capitalism says this is fine, if you don’t like it don’t do it, etc. – and as the comments show, many have internalised that worldview – whereas social conservatism (somewhat understandably) goes, "WTF? They’re teaching children to be strippers." This is where, even though I fundamentally disagree with him on most things, I think Fox News host (and Trump favourite) Tucker Carlson has a fairly consistent understanding of the world: he recognises that these things are contradictory, and that the Reagan-era marriage of the social and economic right was a con. Society falls apart into an incoherent, nihilistic mess if you try to synthesise these things.

2) The private schoolboys’ chant: Again, there’s nuance here. I don’t agree with the frankly prudish and old-fashioned view (implicit in some of the responses to this) that talking vulgarly about sex is demeaning to women. There’s nothing wrong with a dirty joke in private, and we shouldn’t become Mary Whitehouses about teenage boys making sexual jokes. While the chant maybe goes a bit further than that, I think the biggest problem here is that they did it in a public space, deliberately, in the knowledge that it would be upsetting for the people of all ages forced to share a carriage with them. That does indicate a disrespect for others that has more concerning implications, I think (and says quite a lot about the arrogant, elitist culture of private schools).

Wow, I'd call that way overthinking the pole dancing. Shocked

Just remembered about that putrid “jokes” thread in the bored board (that was deleted, thankfully). Of course the author of that would find nothing offensive in the chant.

Some people can find offense in almost anything, they're wired that way, and social media lets them share that. If you think it's offensive, good for you. I thought it was crass and stupid, pretty much what you'd expect from high school kids.

I feel like every little phenomenon represents something bigger, or at least has the capacity to reflect broader social trends. An exercise club presumably run by normies just looking to make a buck (i.e. not shock artists, sexual deviants or political subversives) thought this was a completely acceptable and uncontroversial thing to offer, whereas a lot of equally normal people who saw the ad were horrified. Neither of those views emerged from nowhere, and both are quite understandable. That’s an interesting disconnect that merits exploration, I think.

It's a disconnect that happens all the time. In that example the polar extremes were on one hand you had parents who signed their kids up for the classes and the other hand parents who rang the place with threats.

Very few things are universally agreed, the majority are subjective based on individual perception. That's partly why I find the notion of people getting outraged and offended so badly, quite humorous.
