Build his engine and he'll be one of the best clearance players in the league.

Two things he definitely needs to improve: tank and ability to play another role. He hurt us badly in the GF by only playing 55% of game time. Was that lack of fitness or because he could only play centre square? Probably a mix. He had a very good first half but faded badly. Needs to be able to run out a game and play somewhere other than centre square.

As a 20-21 year old he won't be a lock in our 22 next year. We have a strong midfield group and he will need to perform to retain his spot. That's a good thing.

Agree partly. But he brings a different mix than all our other mids. A bull.

I'm not as bullish about Wells. Don't think he's best 22.

Sier is best 22 but needs to build his tank. He was great in the first half of the Grand Final but was tired in the second half.

I would have thought Sier is in ANY Collingwood team going forward. Dont know who comes out for him. Maybe Wells. He is cooked.

B: Brayden Maynard, Lynden Dunn, Tom Langdon
HB: Jeremy Howe, Darcy Moore, Jack Crisp
C: Steele Sidebottom, Scott Pendlebury, Taylor Adams
HF: Will Hoskin-Elliott, Brody Mihocek, Josh Thomas
F: Jamie Elliott, Mason Cox, Jordan De Goey
FOLL: Brodie Grundy, Dayne Beams, Adam Treloar
I/C: Daniel Wells, Jaidyn Stephenson, Tom Phillips, Tyson Goldsack

Not surprisingly, this was the toughest Collingwood 22 to pick in six or seven years. The strength of the side is shown not only by the class on the field but by those we couldn't squeeze in. Missing from the team that went down to West Coast in the grand final, it pains us to say, are experienced trio Travis Varcoe, Chris Mayne and Levi Greenwood, along with younger runners Brayden Sier and James Aish, while swingman Ben Reid and Matt Scharenberg were also unlucky. With such hot competition for spots, ex-Bulldog Jordan Roughead was also overlooked. The big inclusions are four matchwinners: Darcy Moore at centre half-back, returning star Dayne Beams and veteran Daniel Wells, who further bolster a star-studded midfield, and Jamie Elliott into attack. We can be accused of erring on the side of attacking flair, but so be it. - Ben Collins

Hard to argue against that team. Impossible if you swapped Wells for Varcoe and Sier for Goldsack or Phillips Wink

More than ever, I think the reality will be that our best 22 will likely change from one opposition to the next. Finding the correct match ups against a different opposition every week ( without the advantage of the extra ) will change depending on the body shapes and skill sets of the opposition.
Setting up with the extra helped to support team mates both in the air and on the ground. It will no longer be as easy for any defenders if the opposition clear the ball from the centre quickly.
Depth and versatility on a list will never be more important with the new starting positions coming into play next year. I reckon we have both.

Agree. the best thing about the team is that even after you pick your best 22, you have at least 6 AFL quality players left. of course, after injuries, that means we'll have 15 players available.

A "best 22" can depend on many things from form to who's available to your opposition
Form can be speculative who would have thought Sidey could go from 41 touches one week to 13 the next with 0 impact on the biggest stage. It wasn't his form that changed was the manner in which the opposition played him.
Richmond allowed him to run free and do as he pleased and he made them pay
West Coast played him tight and never gave him room and he didn't handle it at all
Form wasn't the reason
Cox was looking shot until the Richmond game yet for our structure and lack of Talls he wasn't considered for being dropped
I think we have around 26-30 AFL capable players who can come in and cover if we get injuries after that we are banking on lesser players to fill the void

If every player on our list fully fit and in form then selection becomes very hard really
IMO it would be a horses for courses game by game approach
But here's what I see as our best 22 if every one was fully fit and in form

B. Crisp. Dunn. Howe
HB. Scharenberg Moore. Mayanrd
C. Sidey Phillips. Treloar
HF. Stephenson. Mihoeck. Pendles
F. Beams. Cox. JDG.
R. Grundy. Adams. Sier
Int. Mayne. WHE. Varcoe/Wells. Langdon
Emg. Aish. Goldie. Varcoe/Wells
