Herald Sun take on our best 22

Quote:
COLLINGWOOD
B Brayden Maynard Ben Reid Tom Langdon

HB Jeremy Howe Darcy Moore Jack Crisp

C Steele Sidebottom Scott Pendlebury Tom Phillips

HF Will Hoskin-Elliott Brody Mihocek Dayne Beams

F Jamie Elliott Mason Cox Jordan De Goey

Foll Brodie Grundy Taylor Adams Adam Treloar

I/C Jaidyn Stephenson Josh Thomas Daniel Wells Travis Varcoe

Next in line: Brayden Sier, Chris Mayne, Tyson Goldsack, James Aish, Levi Greenwood, Jordan Roughead

KATE SALEMME SAYS: Lynden Dunn and Matt Scharenberg are facing delayed starts to 2019 after knee reconstructions. Sier, Mayne, Aish and Greenwood are mightily unlucky not to be picked but if the big guns are all fit, some players have to miss out. Reid gets the nod at full-back just ahead of Goldsack because of his size but if both are fit and available, it will be horses for courses, depending on form and match-ups.

Interesting Reid and Wells are in

^ I think the trouble is we are so used to them having constant injuries that we no longer see them as automatic inclusions in our best 22. But if we can trust them enough that they don't break down then they're in our best. If others pass them on form (through father time catching up) then so be it, but either way, we have depth, which will hold us in good stead.

I suppose you're right. Fit and in form both would be either in our best or bloody close to it, it's just been so long since either was.

Ben Reid was considered fit for selection and was overlooked in our finals campaign.
He's no longer best 22.

We are assuming that such a "best 22" side has everyone at full fitness. Accordingly, can't believe how most of you would have Wells out of the best 22 side. As much as I like Sier, the return of Beams (and fitness of Wells) puts his spot in some jeopardy

Wells would be lucky to play 10 games. I still prefer Sier....

Yep.... even with Wells fit I'd take Sier first.

Him and Adams are our in and under mids.... they get it out to Rusty and Pendles which is exactly who we want with ball in hand making decisions as we go forward

Personally I think Daniel might have to earn his way back in.... a number of full tilt injury free weeks in the magoos before he is even on the board for consideration

I would have thought Sier is in ANY Collingwood team going forward. Dont know who comes out for him. Maybe Wells. He is cooked.

B: Brayden Maynard, Lynden Dunn, Tom Langdon
HB: Jeremy Howe, Darcy Moore, Jack Crisp
C: Steele Sidebottom, Scott Pendlebury, Taylor Adams
HF: Will Hoskin-Elliott, Brody Mihocek, Josh Thomas
F: Jamie Elliott, Mason Cox, Jordan De Goey
FOLL: Brodie Grundy, Dayne Beams, Adam Treloar
I/C: Daniel Wells, Jaidyn Stephenson, Tom Phillips, Tyson Goldsack

Not surprisingly, this was the toughest Collingwood 22 to pick in six or seven years. The strength of the side is shown not only by the class on the field but by those we couldn't squeeze in. Missing from the team that went down to West Coast in the grand final, it pains us to say, are experienced trio Travis Varcoe, Chris Mayne and Levi Greenwood, along with younger runners Brayden Sier and James Aish, while swingman Ben Reid and Matt Scharenberg were also unlucky. With such hot competition for spots, ex-Bulldog Jordan Roughead was also overlooked. The big inclusions are four matchwinners: Darcy Moore at centre half-back, returning star Dayne Beams and veteran Daniel Wells, who further bolster a star-studded midfield, and Jamie Elliott into attack. We can be accused of erring on the side of attacking flair, but so be it. - Ben Collins

I just follow the rule of Mick Malthouse that your best players from the grand final side are in your best side, so you can't drop Sier, Mayne and Varcoe. It's up to others to displace them from our best side. I concede Moore and Elliot are in our best side, but since Aish, Greenwood and Goldsack were the three weakest from our grand final side, those are the three I would drop.

I think the comment on the AFL best 22 is apt. The strength of the team you select is really demonstrated by those who you leave out.

Picking a best 22 is really subjective, but no matter how you slice it, if we have everyone fit and in form we have some serious depth with over 30 players in the mix for that best 22.

how many of our best 22 get on the park?

i say maximum 18-20 players from our best side are available so that leaves up to 4 spots free for the other players.

Goldsack is the odd pick here for mine with the players that have been left out. Mayne and Scharenberg are clearly ahead and Aish, Varcoe and Greenwood are a better fit for a 22 including Dunn and Langdon.

Wells is too far away from full fitness. At his peak, even at his age, including him in the 22 makes some sense. Only just though, at 34 even the best case scenario is not overly exciting. Sier has to be ahead of him.

With these being the only debatable picks I can see, it's actually quite an easy 22 to pick. If we ever are fully fit, competition for those last two spots will be fierce and previously entrenched players will also come under threat.

5 changes from the GF team.

OUT:
Varcoe, Mayne, Greenwood, Sier and Aish

IN:
Moore, Dunn, Elliot, Beams and Wells.

Those outs along with Ben Reid and Matt Scharenberg, who will most most of the year, tells me we have a great team to choose from.

I think Wells and Elliot will have question marks about how well they can bounce back, whilst Goldsack is the most likely to make way for one of those outs. Providing they are fit, Moore and Dunn are in the best 22.

If only we won the flag a few weeks back. I wouldn't feel so bad about omitting anyone.

I think Sier is in our best 22.

Build his engine and he'll be one of the best clearance players in the league.
