Why would we want a player who's only known skill is floating across half-back picking up easy kicks when we have an Adam Oxley of our own?

OK, that's not fair to either player. Goddard doesn't just get easy kicks. And Oxley, if he ever gets his radar going again, is a wonderful kick.

Well, he used to be.

I have no idea what happened to him. In the two games he's played this year, his kicking - once a feature of his game - seems to have gone seriously downhill. But at least he boots it in a generally easterly or westerly direction on most grounds, unlike Goddard who only kicks east-west instead of north-south when he turns around and kicks it backwards. Lack of confidence in his own skills maybe? Or lack of confidence in his teammates to win a contested ball? Whatever - Goddard is barely a shadow of the player he was a few years ago. Time to hang 'em up.

He might get picked up for one more year by a struggling club - St Vomit for example - but you'd reckon they'd want someone who is more of a mentor than a shouter and pointer.

Goddard has been doing stints on ABC radio as a special comments man. He's actually pretty good at that: insightful, balanced, and worth listening to. I wouldn't mind hearing more of him next year in that role.

I'd take him cheap for one year as a replacement for Shaz IF we thought we could turn him into a mobile FB - that's a hell of a change from his current uncontested type of footy though so I think it's a bit beyond him (and us!) and I think we'll have other priorities.
