Lots of sarcastic posts here. That's ok; none of us feel too kindly at present.

Anyway, Murray looked really good and at this stage, looks to be worth our second round draft pick which we swapped for him.

Stephenson also looks good.

I liked the one early where he marked the ball on the boundary and immediately took his opponent on in the same stride and was on his wrong side.

It was just pure instinct and not the burden of slowing the ball down and switching like all our other defenders have been taught under Buckley watch.

Wait till he get his disposal count up into the high 20's, 30's will be our next heater.

Murray speaks about his debut
Hear from Sam Murray and his proud parents, following his senior debut for Collingwood against Hawthorn in round one, 2018.

Can we get a formal apology from those people who insisted that Sam Murray was a trading disaster. He is already looking like a bargain (and certainly a better bargain than our third round pick, which certain heroes on this board who criticized the Murray trade thought was actually worth a six pick!!).

This kid has me just as excited as Jaidyn Stephenson.

I like him already. The Collingwood "system" hasn't gotten to him yet. Let's keep it that way. In fact, maybe have him teach some of the other players about fast break footbal and run and carry.

Completely agree but good luck with anyone saying they were wrong about him. Sone of the comments were ridiculous, especially when I doubt if anyone had actually seen him live in the NEAFL

He’s the modern defender who takes the game on and breaks the lines. It’s virtually the only way to get a few cheapies out the back these days with the way the extra defender sets up. We have long needed run and carry out of defence and I reckon Hine has done ok to pluck this kid without having played an AFL game.

Was no one at all concerned about his disposal?
I don't think he performed better than (e.g.) Sinkers has in the past.

His game only got better on a second watching. That sequence in the last quarter where he had no immediate option, but used his speed to create time in the last line of defence and delivered a perfectly weighted pass to Moore.... that was exactly what we need.

Yep and Hope Bucks and Co Figure that out

Not concerned at all for a couple reasons -

It’s his first game and probably the most nervous he has ever been in his life ( same as any debutant ) Never grade a kid on his first game. If he plays ok, it’s a bonus.

Because of his position, there will always be the odd panic kicks that don’t hit their targets. His major strength of having the ability to run and carry will far outweigh his odd turnover blue. Hopefully most of his turnovers will occur beyond out defensive 50, so at least we have the time to get back and defend the rebound kick. It’s the errors INSIDE your own defensive 50 that kill you in so many more ways than an error outside the defensive 50.

It's also a perception thing. Sinkers stank it up pretty badly at first but over the years, tightened up his kicking fairly much to a passable level most times. A lot of people couldn't let go of how poor he was at the start though and so he remained shyte in their eyes. Murray has started at Sinkers' end level, I'd say and so hopefully has a bit more improvement in him.

I am happy for the kid and thought it was a good debut in a squad that was down over most of the park. He won a few contests, had good pace, shook things up with it and hit most of his targets. No doubt he'll snap his hamstring so bad in a few days he'll probably garrote himself - it's the Collingwood way

Murray played better than more experienced players.
Wish him well.

hes running & disposal is better than most in the team so he's probably
on a high and brimming with confidence because of all the shite
he sees up field from players on a much higher pay scale than he.
so I hope he can stay on the park and demand more because of this
and then I hope it brings back confidence to a team devoured of
anything close to what he has the potential to.

maybe sam should bring over a couple of his swan neafl mates to
replace our much more fancied pretenders.

Post subject: Murray's (no longer so) puzzling absenceReply with quote

Watching Bucks presser after the game, when quizzed about Murray's reason for pulling out, he said that Murray rang the club and pulled out for 'personal reasons', and with a grin he added 'I've got nothing to add'.

It's all rather strange and I'm surprised the media hasn't delved into it more. I hope he is OK and there are no family health issues, but it must have been something rather serious to pull out of a game the day before on the eve of the finals.
