Post subject: Magoo <- where did this name come from? | |
|
Young Collingwood supporter here, I have seen the VFL team be called the Magoos a few times. I was just wondering the origins of this particular nickname.
Im doing a University project on Collingwood (graphic design)
I have to make a craft beer and theme them around the club
For example some ideas could be
Buckleys Brew
Lulie St Lager

I'll defer to the old timers here, but I was always under the impression that "magoos" was slang for the reserves. As in, the senior side were the "ones", the reserves the "twos" and that "magoos" was just something that evolved out of that over the years.
You often hear older supporters of the Victorian teams say 'so and so apparently had a good game in the magoos'. It's used in that context.
I suppose with our choice in mascot, the term 'magoos' referring to our reserves/VFL is a unique situation where slang also melds with our symbol... _________________ I am vengeance. I am the night. I am MagpieBat. |

I should add, "Lulie Street Lager" has a nice ring to it... _________________ I am vengeance. I am the night. I am MagpieBat. |

I'm not saying if I'm an old timer or not but its a rhyming slang term 'Twos' rhymes with 'Magoos' and that is related to the fumbling cartoon character Mr Magoo https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t8GTHXTEvIc _________________ I think therefore I think - I think |

I'll step around the "old timer" tag too, but yes Magoos is just rhyming slang for the 2's AKA the reserves team.
In country footy when I grew up, the senior first team was the ones, senior reserves team was the 2's, U17's was the 3rds and U14's the 4ths.
I dunno how relevant Mr Magoo is. _________________ Every dead body on Mt Everest was once a highly motivated person, so maybe just calm the **** down. |

Might have to watch copy-write the Lulie Street tavern might have a hold on Lulie street Lager ( which I think is the best of three names BTW) _________________ I think therefore I think - I think |

I should add, gentlemen, that I mean "old timer" only in the most affectionate way... _________________ I am vengeance. I am the night. I am MagpieBat. |

Thanks for the replies, you have all confirmed my enitial assumption,
And I do agree that Lulie St Lager has the best roll off the tongue so far.
Fortunately for me as a student, and doing this project for my graphic design studies, i wont be breaking any copywrited material since its all a hyperthetical to increase my design skills.
Id love to do something that has never been done, so Ill keep thinking of different ideas.
Thanks again! _________________ The American Pie - Watch Him Fly |
