I'm not sure what "trading live picks" even means... |

I'm pretty sure trading live picks is being able to trade picks in the draft, as the draft occurs _________________ Every dead body on Mt Everest was once a highly motivated person, so maybe just calm the **** down. |

That’s basically it. Most live draft trading will occur after the first round when some clubs will begin to draft for specific needs rather than next best player that usually occurs in the first round.
A good example would be if a club specifically has a need they want to fill. The club would know the player they are targeting but the scenario might be that they are still 15 picks away from their next selection.
If that club is so desperate to secure that player, they may choose to trade out two later picks for an earlier pick that brings them closer to selecting that player with the new improved pick.
It will also be good for those clubs who are very confident in a later speculative pick but don’t want to see an opposition club get in just before them late in the draft. |

Dunno about everyone else but the whole draft and trade thing seems to be getting more confusing by the year. Points, bidding, compensation, categories, free, restricted, live picks..
Maybe I'm getting old but footy used to be so much simpler _________________ Formally frankiboy and FrankieGoesToCollingwood. |

Bloody hell.
The top 10 being announced already takes an eternity these days and now they want to drag out the entire draft for 2 days.

2 Day draft. Media whores.
I never hated the VFL.
I never hated the AFL until Brisbane beat us with more money in the salary cap.
Then it increased when the cost of pies passed $4.00
Then it increased in 2011, when they brought in the Swanny rule.
Then it increased when they brought in the sub vest.
Then it increased when they brought in reserved seating for ANZAC Day.
Then it increased when they brought in variable pricing.
Then it increased when they scheduled us for Sunday twilight games.
Then it increased when they brought in reserved seating in level 4.
Then it increased when they extended the ads after a goal at the G to double what they were.
Then it increased when the reserved seating extended to row AA even against Freo.
Then it increased when you hear recorded cheers and crowd noise from the PA.
Also the longer draft period
Bidding on father-sons
GWS and Gold Coast
They just will not stop.
We used to have decades of stability. Now its months, sometimes weeks.
As someone said, the rule changes are to yield more goals. More goals means more ads. More ads means more money for telecasters and makes the rights valuable. _________________ Get back on top. |

The Americanization of all things continues unabated. This is how they do it in the states. Its so dumb for the AFL to be copying it.
essentially, live trading is kind of like giving the teams the chance to mess with each other so that each player gets drafted based on ability and each team has a shot at picking up the player they need in the correct draft slot.
The reason this is done in the NFL is that there is a rookie scale that is MASSIVE. A number 1 draft pick gets paid many many millions of dollars and a lot more money than, say, a number 5 draft pick. What this means is that if you own the number 1 pick, it can be a curse if you dont actually need the player that is the best player in the draft (e.g., if you dont need a quarterback and the top three prospects are quarterbacks and lineman and your need is a wide receiver- you might end up paying a wide receiver WAAAAY more than you have to by taking him one). This just isn't the case in the AFL. Yeah it would be nice to take the player you want at 5 instead of 1, but it doesn't make much difference to their pay and therefore the salary cap hit (at least i don't think so).
In the NBA there are about 4 different types of players but they basically only do one round. So if you want a point guard, and have the number 1 pick, its quite possible that the 6 best players are power forwards, and in the NBA the gap in salary between number 1 and number 6 is enormous. People also acknowledge that you can only really get a difference maker in the top few picks (with some rare but notable exceptions). So people will give up a fortune to move from 5 to 2 for example. Maybe a future fist round pick.
Can you seriously imagine people going up a few places on the draft to get a player (when a near identical player is available at about the same salary). And being prepared to give up the farm to do so. Remember, this is in circumstances where they have already had an opportunity to do something the week earlier during trade period. Its all a little rubbish for the little AFL.
They also might have missed the memo from the US in the last couple of years. Outside of the top 10 picks, the draft is a ratings disaster!!!!! _________________ Ohhh, the Premiership's a cakewalk ....... |
