^ the action was a throw, agreed, but say a player had a kicking action whereby he threw the ball upward every time and kicked it on the way down. I think it has to be allowed. If you fail to kick it, of course, then it is a free against. .

I think throwing the ball away from you and then getting your foot to where you throw it, is a throw.

Can i throw the ball over a players head so long as my foot touches it before the ball hits the ground. No way.

Under the rules you can, I think. Anyway, it’s not likely to happen, is it ? As I said, it’s a bit grey, but I’d have paid it if Daicos had kicked it.

This is the definition of a throw accord to the AFL rule book

Throw: shall be given its ordinary meaning, but also includes the act of propelling the football with one or both hands in a scooping motion. A Player does not throw the football if the Player hits, punches or taps the football without taking possession of the football.

A scooping motion would be exactly what Higgins did (i.e. he had possession and then threw it in a scooping motion) - the fact that after scooping he connected with his foot is immaterial, the throw had already happened.

^^It was definitely a throw, though not a surprising one for the ump to get wrong, a lot happening. Moore was right onto it though.

Was there a case for “kicking in danger?”

Higgins own version of events - the problem is throwing in cricket is allowable - in AFL it is not

While debate raged around the legality of the goal itself, Higgins wasn’t too concerned and credited an unlikely source for providing the inspiration.
“I was sort of running out (of play) and I took the ball and nearly went into the post,” Higgins said after the game.
“I sort of thought of Glenn Maxwell, so I tried to keep it in play.
“Because I was at the MCG, I saw the crowd, and I just thought ‘Screw it, I am going to do it’.”
He told 3AW post game he thought of the goal “like a cricket catch and throwing it back over the boundary line, Glenn Maxwell sort of thing.”

Whatever.... I don't care, throw or not. not the reason we lost. We lost because we were two men down in the final quarter.

@AFLcomau has tonight confirmed with the umpiring department it was a 'clear goal'.

Nothing to see here.

These aren’t the droids you’re looking for.

As predicted almost the entire football media are saying Higgins' goal wasn't a throw using bizarre logic that it doesn't count as a throw unless you are tackled at the same time!?? I'm one sentence somebody said "high ball drop" then followed with "he threw it in the air to kick a great goal." Wtf? By that logic, does that mean that last year when Mason Cox kept the ball in play by throwing it like a basketball it was legal? Of course not! Why are we at a point now not just in footy where nobody can agree on what fundamentally is or is not? Some things aren't subjective.

Yes, I'm still sore about it. Not that it was a goal but that after the fact, we have a lot of dishonest commentators obfuscating.

Ball went hand to boot, it didn't hit the ground and he didn't take possession of the ball again. No issue with it being paid

^^You can't throw the ball up and then kick it. It's a throw.

Yeah you can, it's not the first goal that's been kicked by throwing the ball in the air then kicking it. There have been a couple, I think Luke parker got one Sydney at the start of the year. Can't remember who got one for us, was being tackled on the ground in the gaol square, threw the ball up an kicked it. Also remember Matthew Lloyd doing something similar.
