Not sure that being against pokies makes you a Puritan.
Maybe its just that those against are a lot more socially aware than some.

In terms of addiction and damage caused, where do pokies rate compared with other forms of gambling, such as sports betting?

a quick search at http://www.qgso.qld.gov.au/products/reports/aus-gambling-stats/

reveals
per capita Victorian spending on gambling:

racing $580
pokies $6027
gaming total (casinos pokies etc) 9435
sports betting online $407

the last figure is likely to be more as these figures are for 2016.

good move to ditch the pokies. can't have it both ways. our leaders tout us as a community club but support a business model that's designed to prey on the vulnerable and those subject to addiction. yes some of us enjoy pokies in moderation but too many cannot manage their lure. Id ban them all and allow gambling that requires or at least encourages some level of thinking or skill eg cards or racing. as for suggestions to not ditch pokies either because someone else will take our place or there's no other revenue sources... thats weak as piss. show some leadership and uae your imagination instead. im glad thats what we are doing.

Social awareness is subject to ones interpretation.

Until gambling becomes illegal, I dont see the problem with adults choosing to spend their time putting money into a machine.

I have no problem with casinos or punting, thats what they are there for.

I have been involved in footy clubs for years and the fabric of a footy club is all about bringing the community together and creating a good environment for people to be involved in sport and community activities.
AFL clubs will happily tell you how much they give back to the community with sport clinics, community projects and involving themselves in various local charities.
Thats all true but to then be making millions from gaming revenue within that same community smacks of a conflict of interest.
If youre going to put your hand up and tell everyone how community minded you are, surely you cant be deriving revenue from pokie machines at the same time.
Sometimes you have to practice what you preach, even if it does cost you a few quid along the way.

Well let's go the full distance then and ban pokies from all of Victoria then. I used to enjoy crossing the NSW border to play them when they were banned from Victoria. The clubs put on cheap meals and entertainment which made it a good weekend. Now we don't have them the addicts will go somewhere else and do their money just the same as they do now at our club owned venues.

With due respect, IMO if they were intelligent they wouldn't have done it.

Congratulations Collingwood. Well done to Eddie and the board. A fine step.

When they were planning on building Crown Casino an overseas "expert" on the gaming / casino industry was asked about where the best place was to locate a casino? He replied as far way from population centres as possible (or words to that effect).

Well said.

The pokie venues were located in Toorak, Kooyong and Armadale weren't they?

In relation to the Community mindedness... in Qld (and I imagine Vic have something similar), the State Govt administer the Gambling Community Benefit Fund which provides grant opportunities to Community organisations which include such things as disability support services, elderly and 'at risk' socialisation, men's sheds (aimed at assisting depression in retired men) and the like.

The funds for GCBF come from a legislated percentage of gambling revenue which is primarily pokies. It could be argued that as a result, there is Community benefit in pokies...

I don't take this view myself, but thought it pertinent to add to the conversation.

Addiction pays little heed to intelligence its an illness, and one that pokie machine operators enable and profit from.
