Watched the game. Thought he was ok but Vic country were pretty poor going forward, so Kellys day was fairly easy. He kicked out a bit and he is also a big roost of the footy amongst his other qualities.

The likely final will be Vic metro and S A. Would be a great test for Kelly if he spends any time on Lukosuis. Will be a great game to watch with this year’s S A talent being their best representation in years. ( S A’s Lukosuis, Rankin and Rozee will all be top 10 in this draft )

Good. Play Kelly on Lukosuis. Lukosuis will thrash him. We then pick up Kelly with a fifth round draft pick (and Carlton stays above Brisbane on the ladder meaning Lukosuis can have his football career wrecked by having to play for a Queensland team).

I like your thinking. We are certainly going to need some creative accountancy over trade period if we are going to land both Quaynor and Kelly without chopping up our first round pick on them. I’m sure that thread is to follow later in the year.

Kelly is an interesting story, as recently as 12 months ago, he wasn’t really highly regarded as a TAC U18 C H F.
This year the Chargers trialled him at C H B and he has really developed quickly in that role. Like most sports, when you have a sharp development curve, you always flatten out for a period before the next level of improvement kicks in.
His has all the athletic attributes for the modern game. Good skills but needs to improve overhead ( and probably why he was trialled in the back line )
Throw in our father son discount and we would be crazy not to match the first bid that he attracts.

It's issues like this that make me appreciate the tough job that the recruiters have. The physical changes that occur in growing boys mean that the one who is a superstar at 15 can be over the hill by the time he is 17 and the 17 year old that is dominating in the TAC won't be good enough to get onto an AFL list. The 18 year old low draft pick list clogger may develop into a superstar.

All we really know is how these boys play at one particular point of their development. We don't know how they are going to develop in the future. In cricket a good example is Steve Smith. I thought he was just a crap leg spinner when I first saw him but he soon became something very different.

The other thing we don't know is how the other recruiters rate Kelly and Quaynor.

Your comments about the challenges that come with recruiting are spot on.
Trying to pick a future 10 year AFL KPP as a 17 year old is the biggest challenge of the lot.
So many talls are stand outs simply because they are bigger than their 17 year old opposition. They get to the AFL and they just don’t cut it against men who are as big or bigger than them.
The KPP kids don’t get the constant battering in the U18s because of the anti density rules and down there it seems like an easy game to some of these kids.
Recruiters can’t judge how draftees will be influenced by all the adulation and sycophants that come with being an AFL player. Conversely, the same can be said about ( negative ) social media. It destroys some kids along the way.
Recruiters live and die by their success ratio but sometimes the poor outcomes are really out of their control.

Reminder - regarding what other clubs really think about Kelly and Quaynor as prospects. Come draft day, there will be a club that selects these guys before we do. Once that’s occurred, then all we have to do is agree to match the discounted bid or not.
So at least we then know that one club was prepared to pick them up before they make their way to Collingwood.
