Post subject: Pies using our Reserves like the Hawks | |
|
Hawthorn footy club have made a habit over the years of making their Reserves team a real “breeding ground” for their Senior teams success. Think of these players from the past and recent times whom played 40-100 matches in the Magoos before establishing long term Senior careers:
Hawks:
Michael Tuck (98 games)
Dipper (80+)
James Morrisey
Paul Abbott
Chris Wittman
Dean Anderson
Peter Curran
Gary Ayres
James Sicily
Daniel Howe
Tim O’Brien
Jon Ceglar
Taylor Duryea
Luke Breust
Have all made impacting Senior careers after long apprenticeships in the Reserves. How does this pertain to the Pies? Well if we look at our recent and current list, building 30+ matches in the Reserves to players such as:
Daicos
McLarty
Lynch (extraordinary improvement)
Sier
Rupert W
Kirby (hopefully)
Can only enhance their transition when they become regular Senior players. Obviously a good run of injuries assists this process and a “clear promotion/relegation” understanding for said players. _________________ I love the Pies, hate Carlscum

Spot on.
The longer you can leave the younger players in the reserves, the better for their development both physically and mentally.
But, this is only possible if you don’t have many injuries or senior players playing so poorly that they have to get dropped.
Sier is a good example of this. It’s only this year that he has finally shown anything....and that anything looks pretty impressive.
Hopefully we are not forced to play the youngsters in the seniors, instead allowing them to develop in the VFL. _________________ - Side By Side - |

good morning Mr INXS.
extremely astute post about what underpins the club strategy with these players
this is consistent with my preseason observations about how these lads are tracking.
Lynch did an enormous amount of work with Grundy in terms of additional fitness work - he couldn't keep pace, but was clearly being mentored by number 4.
McLarty is making great strides and will benefit from a year in the twos.
Sier and Daicos are both on the verge of breaking through to senior ranks.
Tyler Brown is very slight, but a year in the seconds will do him the world of good.
Nathan Murphy is one to watch- a fierce competitor with many attributes (speed, skill and marking talent) that will stand him in good stead over the journey. _________________ Firm in the belief that number 17 flag is only months away... |

Good evening SoR. Down 17 kilograms but still a way to go yet. Low Carbs diet is going well and I am able to walk a few kilometres a day on flat terrain.
The surgery has been put back till mid- September to give me the chance to shed even more weight.
It has to be done regardless how much weight I lose, but my blood pressure and cholesterol are at levels they haven't been since Ian McOrist kicked six goals against the Lions.

Yes, this has been discussed before. The problem is that the VFL standard is so low that it's less clear how good a preparation this is. |

Fantastic effort Warburton Lad, 17 kilos is no mean feat - who knows what that figure will be come September. Are you varying the diet or are you "staying true to the structures and the game plan".. ?? |
