Geez, I enjoy a lamb chop as much as anyone, but this form of trade needs a major overhaul, to say the least!

Some of the footage I've seen is nothing short of a disgrace.
The politicians lack of action is pathetic.

My understanding is that the percentage of these live exports being conducted for religious/cultural reasons is in the high nineties.

If you are aware of the methods of slaughter at the other end then surely you would ask these destination countries to farm their own.

I've also heard the value of this aspect of the industry to our farmers range from 80 to 250 million. That's an astounding variance.

Greed. How do you stop that juggernaut?

All love exports should be stopped, we have a moral responsibility to care for animals welfare from start to finish. And while we are at it, our own abattoirs need an overhaul.

Doesnt matter how much money is made. Stop it, or reform it to meet Australian standards for animal welfare.

A planetary visitor would conclude that we define cruelty to animals as the infliction of suffering when no money is made, and that we are a very strange species immune to fact and reason.

^ agreed, Skids. Newspapers shower tears when a racehorse falls fatally in a hurdle, and then watch this vast atrocity go on by. Strange.

Dave the truth is they dont need to have live exports, there are other more humane ways of doing it.

Need and want are two different things

Support for live export ban grows as shutdown bill begins voyage through Parliament

Support for shutting down the live sheep export trade is gaining ground, with Labor set to formally endorse the proposal this week.

Liberal MP Sussan Ley will today introduce a private member's bill that would ban live sheep exports to the Middle East during the northern hemisphere summer months in 2019 and entirely close the sector down in five years

Key points:
The Live Sheep Long Haul Export Prohibition Bill will be introduced to Parliament today
Sussan Ley has backing of two Liberal colleagues, believes numbers will increase
Shadow Ag Minister says Labor will lock in support for the bill

Let's take the next step and stop eating animals. You know it's the right thing to do. Better for the environment and better for health: primarily for the health of the animal.

Lowers blood pressure, reduces bowel cancer and helps all the stuggling tofu farmers.

^ Its hardly an irrelevant comment, is it? Not much of a stretch to go from opposing cruel animal transport practices to opposing the industry as a whole, as many of those who oppose live transport undoubtedly already do.

Vegetarianism is good on many grounds, but in relation to the present system of live animal exports its the ultimate in misplaced whataboutery. Its possible to construct an ethical case for well-husbanded omnivorousness. I cant see any case for the arrant cruelty of live exports.

I agree. Ive pretty much given up anything pig, thank the lord for cosco and turkey bacon. I wont buy it in the supermarket or out for dinner but if a bit of ham gets on my plate I dont go troppo, well like I would if you lit a ciggerette up in front of me anyway! I still eat beef but not often, we just about live on chicken. God help me if I see an Aussie video on them like I did on the pigs. I tried to give up milk too, potty calves, ugh, god man is an awful awful beast
