Post subject: Our training ground? | |
|
Quote: |
COLLINGWOOD star Steele Sidebottom says some teammates have raised concerns over the firmness of the Pies' training ground as the club searches for answers on its savage injury toll. |

"But there's definitely been talk from a few of our guys that it can get hard ... It mightn't be the best ground out there but for me personally it's fine. But I suppose it's just something we're going to have to deal with." |
That's a big issue if players are having issues with the hardness of the ground |

I've trained a few times this year on the ground but only in runners and not in football boots. It seems pretty nice, but on balance a little bit firm. I'd have been surprised if it was too problematic though. It's certainly not Etihad Stadium, with a concrete carpark underneath.
It's also certainly not as soft as the parkland-stye surface the players had at Gosch's Paddock though. _________________ One team, one dream - the Pies and this year's premiership |

It's not as soft as other grounds, but you have to take into account that we've had little natural rainfall in 3 months and are experiencing a late summer in autumn (today about 30 degrees which is baking the ground). The ground itself lies on the flat of the riverbank with the hills on the other side of the river and is surrounded by concrete structures around it. The ground is hard but then most grounds in Melbourne at this time are hard as well. Elliot pulled up sore after his game in Preston. Adams is difficult to judge. Players have to train. How else can they perform in games? The players exercise out on the field with the fitness coach before they do their football training (and do gym work inside the training centre). The surface of the ground is regularly watered and sections are roped off to allow the grass to grow. Really not sure what else the club can do apart from relocating the training centre back to Victoria Park (and losing their proximity to the MCG). |

This topic has serious merit...
All local turf cricket grounds have MCG like surface. 'Soft but not too soft'. The black turf soil spreads across the ground over time and grows a much stronger knit grass. which still thrives in autumn through winter. Vic Park, Goshs paddock no different.
Absurd soft tissues ever since the move to that site |

i wrote it in elliots injury post and i have written it in the past...bad training (excersises, tactics, pressure etc) and bad trainng fields causes many injuries.. its easy to find out..change where you train for 1 month and see |

Would 1 mth really be enough to see? Depends what one aims to see, I guess.
I'm wondering how difficult it is to change the characteristics of a ground. Somehow it seems like something that ought to be possible. |

If not train at another location for 3-6 months and see. Nothing to lose, everything to gain. Didn't someone report that even Sidebottom mentioned it - so why not? _________________ Pies Forever |

Well, at the very least, the club should get the characteristics of the training ground measured. That apparently is straightforward enough, so there aren't really any good excuses for not doing it. |
