Cheers.

My post has come about with the two new injuries to Elliott and Adams. A few years ago Eddie McGuire did a review on our sports science team because of a number of hamstring injuries.

To date in 2018, we've had 8 players with hamstring injuries. Surely this is a fail by the sports science team?

Make sure it’s personal, full of angst and reeks of a vendetta not vanilla! 😁

I don’t think it’s our sports science guys. We’ve had several in that role. Once you do hammies there is always s chance of reoccurrence. Unfortunately we have several players in that category.

Who is it then?

It's occurred for 6 straight years.

The individual.

Elliot has back/hammy history. That shit, if you're prone to it, doesn't just go away.

Adams had never done his hamstring prior to joining Collingwood.

There is a suggestion around the traps that the ground at the Holden Centre might be too hard. Have no idea whether this has any effect on hamstrings?

Ground conditions have zero to do with hamstring injuries. Unless it's littered with potholes.

Cause

Muscle Overload

Muscle overload is the main cause of hamstring muscle strain. This can happen when the muscle is stretched beyond its capacity or challenged with a sudden load.

Hamstring muscle strains often occur when the muscle lengthens as it contracts, or shortens. Although it sounds contradictory, this happens when you extend a muscle while it is weighted, or loaded. This is called an "eccentric contraction."

During sprinting, the hamstring muscles contract eccentrically as the back leg is straightened and the toes are used to push off and move forward. The hamstring muscles are not only lengthened at this point in the stride, but they are also loaded — with body weight as well as the force required for forward motion.

Like strains, hamstring tendon avulsions are also caused by large, sudden loads.

Risk Factors

Several factors can make it more likely you will have a muscle strain, including:

Muscle tightness
. Tight muscles are vulnerable to strain. Athletes should follow a year-round program of daily stretching exercises.

Muscle imbalance. When one muscle group is much stronger than its opposing muscle group, the imbalance can lead to a strain. This frequently happens with the hamstring muscles. The quadriceps muscles at the front of the thigh are usually more powerful. During high-speed activities, the hamstring may become fatigued faster than the quadriceps. This fatigue can lead to a strain.

Poor conditioning. If your muscles are weak, they are less able to cope with the stress of exercise and are more likely to be injured.

Muscle fatigue. Fatigue reduces the energy-absorbing capabilities of muscle, making them more susceptible to injury.

Choice of activity. Anyone can experience hamstring strain, but those especially at risk are:

Athletes who participate in sports like football, soccer, basketball
Runners or sprinters
Dancers
Older athletes whose exercise program is primarily walking
Adolescent athletes who are still growing

I've suffered hammy strains twice, both on the right side. Going hard is what does it, pushing the limits.

The BIGGEST mistake made with hammys is rushing back.. even when it feels 100%, give it another 2 weeks and come back slowly. Work the quads and glutes lightly and stretch like a mad man before and after a run.

Tom Browne stated that in the Giants game, Moore came off and told the physio he was tight in his hamstring. He said if they rested him then he wouldn't have missed any games.

He was sent back on and pinged his hamstring.

Who? he said?

It's a tough one, when the bloods pumping, you think it's just 'tightness' and you can push through.
With Darcy's history, I would have kept him on ice.

When did he say it was tight? The week before? Confused

If that's true, that is very bad player management.

Tom Browne.

People may say he is a journalist but he is very well connected at Collingwood. His father is Eddie's best mate. He broke the Goldsack ACL and the hamstring injury today. He was relaying some information from Collingwood regarding Moore.
