Post subject: Based on Round 1 what I learnt.... | |
|
Based on round 1 and from last year ladder
- We are probably only above Fremantle and North Melbourne at moment
- Hate to say but think Blues May have gone past us
- suns , Lions and bulldogs are probably on even par with us
- Eagles slightly ahead
- saints , hawks, bombers and dees above us a few levels
- cats , crows , and power another level
Again
- tigers and swans - nowhere near em
- GWS - not even in same ballpark
Obviously as more games are played will get a better feel but need huge improvement on what I’ve seen against Hawks and last years efforts.

I'm not really sure if we are above any team at the moment.
Without our full list available we are down in the bottom four.
With our full list available and everyone in top form we could possibly finish 7th or 8th.
Can you imagine a premiership side with Reid and Cox up forward.
Hawthorn are a bit of a bogey side for us so I'll give the boys a chance but being a natural born pessimist I don't hold any great hope. |

My thoughts are it’s too early to tell. With at least 4 of our best 22 out, we came up against a very good side at their full strength, matched it with them for much of the time, and didn’t play at our best with what we had out there.
Far too little data to draw your conclusions, after one round. _________________ Two more flags before I die! |

I'm really worried we have become the new 'Carlton'. We may be 5 years into a 20 yr wilderness, caused mainly by topping up our list with average (at best) or has-been players such as Lynch, Russell, Young, Mayne, Wells, White and Dunn. Some will say we got these players cheaply, but the point is we could have taken a punt on 17 or 18 yr old talented kids instead and tried to develop them.
As well as these obvious blunders, we definitely gave up too much (2 first round picks ffs) for Treloar.
Throw in the Scharenberg, Freeman and Aish fiascos, it all adds up to a damning indictment of our footy department.
But all's not all doom and gloom, as Derek Hines reckons Mason Cox will prove to be our most important recruit over the past 10 years! |

What I learned was we sat on our hands as Jack Watts had talks with us

You know it’s sad when you agree with this post and rationalise that we can always settle on draft picks in what is a bumper 2018 Draft. Then realise we would actually stuff those up! _________________ I love the Pies, hate Carlscum |

The counter argument to the earlier topping up was that:
a) we over rated our list
b) GWS and GC had the draft concessions so got all the good kids.
Dunn has played some good footy, as has Wells when on the park and White played a role.
No one would have anticipated Sharenbergs knees, Freemans hammies or Aish just not delivering. They were all drafted high for a reason and St Kilda took a punt on Freeman for a reason. Just shit luck there I'm afraid. _________________ Every dead body on Mt Everest was once a highly motivated person, so maybe just calm the **** down. |

Swanny is on the footy show tonight to run his rule over the Collingwood fbc. I think I know what he's going to say. We're not very good. |

Agree DTM. Hawks failed to win a JLT game and most think they are at best, 7 or 8th if everything goes right.
I supposed if every other coach fails to tag Mitchell and allow him to get 50+ possessions, then the Hawks could go 25-0.
Luckily, there are 17 other coaches out there who know how to coach., so I reckon Hawks will win 10 or 11 games this year. |

this is actually the most damning criticism of our team. EVERY team has players out at any given time. All good teams dont miss a beat! We seem to be soooo lacking in depth that one or two injuries makes us non-competitive.
I guess its true though as it seems crazy that Cox (who it appears cannot take an uncontested mark in conditions other than ideal - yep, an AFL player!) and Smith are getting games and Mayne and Blair are threatening to break into the side (and we are only missing 4 players). _________________ Ohhh, the Premiership's a cakewalk ....... |

Every team has 4 of their best 22 out . It's not an excuse |

Hawthorn didn’t. Apart from Birchall they were virtually at full strength last Sat. The difference between most teams in the competition is small. That player difference is material. _________________ Two more flags before I die! |
