Well, in this world you are either running an empire or part of one. And there are better and worse empires. Time will tell re China, but I think that Australians will look back one day, if they still remember, at their time under the British and American empires as a golden era compared to China’s despotic political system.

Benevolent dictatorship is probably the best form of government... until the next guy is a monster with absolute power.

True. Time will tell how Mr Xi fits into this observation.

Ultimately, I think the best form of government is universal suffrage democracy stabilised by a qualified and trained elite. The stabilising elite can be sourced in several ways - intellectual achievement, demonstrated contribution, religious authority can all work depending on the nation, its people and its history. The US uses the Supreme Court and the Senatorial dispersion of power via states. This has worked well up to now, but in a hyper-populist age, I think both are too fragile, now.

Somehow I don't think the U.S. will simply allow us to move into the Chinese sphere of influence.

Spelling may become easier, though:

And what if you're over 35, Stui? Just curl up under a rock and wait to die?

Play it out. They play the long game so you've got 15 -20 years before you're screwed.

Might not their (average proficiency in) English improve faster than English speakers' Chinese?
Or do you think they'll take a Gallic attitude to English?

I think that once we essentially become a vassal state, if you want a job it would be smart to speak a Chinese dialect. The ones in charge will take a gallic view as it were.

Was Chinese New year raceday at Ascot last week. The place was packed with our Asian friends.

I was waiting in line to collect, behind Wang Chung who was holding a nice little collect ticket (yeah, i peeked) but the divys weren't cleared yet.
The old girl says "Come back in 5 minutes" Wang looks around, obviously confused... "5 minutes" she says holding up 5 fingers... Wang looks around again, reaches in his wallet and goes to give the old girl 5 bucks Laughing

I hold up my watch and point plus the 5 fingers... now he gets it.

This bloke doesn't speak a word of English and he's goin' ok Wink
